There are quite a few discussions on the 'are we living in a simulation?' argument.

 

Nick Bostrom's paper is perhaps the most popular.

I read (or rather tried to read) The Physics of Immortality by Frank Tipler, which focusses on the Omega Point. It's one of the few books I gave up on.

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is there, does it make a sound?

 

Sound is vibration, transmitted to our senses through the mechanism of the ear, and recognized as sound only at our nerve centres. The falling of the tree or any other disturbance will produce vibration of the air. If there be no ears to hear, there will be no sound.

So, if you define sound as the perception of molecular vibrations, the tree doesn't make a sound as there's nobody there to perceive the vibrations as sound.

 

However, other definitions say that sound is hearable noise, whether heard or not.

 

In the end, it's a question that just plays with definitions.

What happens if you leave a recording device in the forest? Is there a sound that's picked up by that when it falls or is it still not a sound until you listen to it on the recording? What about animals? Surely in a forest there'd be animals to hear the sound.

When im not sleepig well, i'll go into a train of thought about what it's like when you die, being like when you're asleep (you dont know you're asleep, but it's also not an instantaneous "Sleep/instant alarm"..... if that makes sense....

Something I find spooky is déja vu, I get it a lot and it's really creepy. It's one of those weird unexplainable things that everyone has a theory for.

 

I like this creepypasta:

 

A déjà vu is actually a glitch in reality, and it indicates that something has just been changed. Someone or something has ceased to exist, all memories and records of their existence erased forever. A déjà vu happens when they get into your brain, when they need to change your memories. Maybe to erase your brother from the world. You know, the brother that you never had.

I agree it spooks me occasionally.

 

And occasionally I have just what known what is going to happen in advance, e.g. A few years ago we were driving home from holiday when Mr gee40 got a message on his phone from his PA to call his boss. It was nothing out of the ordinary in tone and that message got left fairly regularly and the job had been going well. He had, to my irritation, been dealing with such things on holiday. Except I knew it was bad news this time... I was sure he had lost his job. Don't ask me why or how, I just did. Mr gee40 picked up his P45 next day having been made redundant.

I imaging that being dead is like it was before you were born and that wasn't too scary, but the process of dying is another matter.

Well, we've all experienced it. I was dead during the middle ages and around the time that the pyramids were being built. It wasn't too bad.
