Classrooms with out Interactive Whiteboards. (or even projectors!)

Scenario: No projectors in classrooms, but everybody has a laptop/chromebook/ipad. (assume device consistency across the scenario)

 

The teachers 'powerpoint' could be shared by a number of realtime collaboration tools (or even plain old email).

 

The teacher could annotate against their powerpoint using the realtime sharing tool... or just have it on each student device as a reference point while they (the teacher) sketch ideas etc on the old fashioned dry-wipe board at the front of the room. Students might be taking notes into OneNote or even a traditional paper based notebook.

 

Question: How would you deal with the video elements that teachers are used to these days?

 

Feel free to talk this one off topic - I'm genuinely interested to see if it might work.

I think the only way this model works financially is with larger groups, and probably not in classroom-sized spaces. With more cuts after the election it may yet come to pass...

Might work with older students but I think one of the benefits of the IWB is that all the students are looking at the teacher/IWB at the front of the room which helps keep them focused and helps the teacher be able to check they are all paying attention.

 

If you have everyone in the room (including the teacher) looking at screens it is more difficult for the kids to focus on what they might be saying (looking at the screen in front of them and listening to someone off in the corner). Also more difficult for the teacher to see if they are paying attention (is that kid looking at the material or reading an email).

 

IMO (again at least for younger kids) the human interaction is an important part of the learning experience and putting technology in the way of that causes problems. They are learning as much about social interaction and communications as they are the subject matter. However for college level and upwards, where people should have already learnt all the norms of social interactions and are pursuing their own learning I see this kind of set up as being pretty useful, especially in larger size groups and big areas (as the above poster said).

without IWB yes, without projectors no. Teaching has always had a focal point to the room, projectors with visualizers are still a very good and robust tool, used well they can be supplemented with collaboration software.

You could always have an all in one IWB with a built-in touchscreen, when the time comes for the inevitable classroom move around, it's 100x easier than re-positioning a projector. It'll be cheaper and easier to manage in the long run and as has been mentioned the IWB creates the vocal point of the classroom. Edited April 28, 2015 by GreyMalkin

Id be more interested in classrooms without teachers. Think about it, each lesson with the entire curriculum on DVD/Network share so that everyone gets the same core lesson... to have and to hold.. for ever!

 

Think of all that money you would save on wages.

You could get cheap Ta's and a few teachers just to ensure there are some margins of error to account for but ... think about how great it would be!!

Over time, I think this will happen in some lessons in some subjects. There are no more "easy" cuts to make.

Indeed we could... We have a y4 teacher who is very close to retiring and a complete computerphobic. She has PPA time scheduled for her class's ICT slot and they are taken for that by a TA because the TA is really quite good with the new computing curriculum, and also because the ICT co-ordinator prepares the lessons for the whole school to such a high standard that the children can pretty much just follow the instructions themselves.
