blk screen.jpg

It's only been happening in the past month or so, but explorer.exe takes a while to load (anywhere between 5-20minutes). They are using sticky keys to get a window open and all drive/printer mappings are fine *set through GPO's*. It's not user or computer specific. Totally out of idea's here as there seems to be no pattern in it. Anyone had similar?

We had this problem about a year ago, it was due to a virus called Recycler and I think our Anti-Virus also was blocking part of Ranger when the machine logged in and caused my documents window to open and no explorer

Can you Ctrl+Alt+Del out of it? Is it happening on wired machines or wireless?

I was having a similar issue but it only seems to be affecting wireless devices.

There's no hint of a problem in the logs except one warning that "the logon provider took xxx seconds to handle the action (logon)."

I've installed an update into wsus and it seems t have gone away at the moment... https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2775511/en-us?wa=wsignin1.0

Thanks for replies, Steven, we don't appear to have any viruses onsite and we don't run ranger. The documents window is being forced open by enabling sticky keys.

Oaktech, We can hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and sometimes it brings up a window we can cancel and explorer loads as usual, sometimes that doesn't do anything either and they just remain on the black screen with the mouse cursor. These are on Wired pcs, though I have been made aware it's happening on some of our Win8 tablets That update was all I could find on it too, hasn't fixed our issue here.

Thanks, We've hit a stuck point really, there seems to be no logic or pattern in it at all. They sit at the same computers in the same lessons and one day they'll get it, the next they won't.

Does this seem to happen at a certain time for example second lesson or the start of some lessons? If so at a guess could it be volume of users logging in at the same time causing some to get dropped and not start correctly, sorry if this is wrong just thinking out loud.

No, it's always good to have another opinion! someone can walk right in and see what you've been looking at for days!

Again theres no pattern. Sometimes its the first user to log in, sometimes with only 60 users on, half of them might have this problem, other times 300 can login at the same time and none get it.

I'm sure you have thought of it, but are you POSITIVE that nothing changed around the time this started? A new printer for example? We did have this when we changed printers as the system spent around 25 secs looking for the old one. It didn't always happen, either

Yeah, that was our thought grey, we've got a old legacy server we p2v'd when we went virtual. It used to have Ranger on (not 100% convinced it's gone, it's a nightmare to get rid of) but we have 2 servers handling DHCP. Wondering if a different one is picking up the problem ones. No way of testing really as it's only happened with Student accounts so far and they're locked down :(

When the network I was working with only had the user name, time of login, computer name and then name of the logon server that was used as you can pick and choose what to have. But I can see your point.

Do you use folder redirection? We found that when there was a problem with our RAID storage, disk response times went through the roof, especially when all students logged on at roughly the same time, we would get the black screen after log on for up to 20 mins.

I set up a redirection for the 'libraries' folder on Win7 to go to their home directory, well, I've put one inplace not that it appears to work. Damn! Now I wonder if that's it. I'm off till Tues 5th but I'll remote in from home and message the NM and see if removing it will help.

This has now appeared following the Windows updates on Tuesday 12th on "some" PC's in school and on my home computer, I'm therefore thinking its related to a recent Windows update.

Now affecting both Windows 7 and 8.1 clients!

we've still not found a fix but have found a work around with using Impero. Selecting the black screen computers, forcing a run of explorer.exe and that forces the logon.

Finally found it. It's an odd one though and neither of us understand why it has made a difference. We removed the Rem'd out bits from our login.bat script. No black screens after logins.
