New PC can't see network

Recently we were given some PC's that had MS Millenium as the OS. I'm currently upgrading to Win XP Pro. However with XP running and IE7 working OK I'm not able to find the school network - all I can see is a Millenium network which is inaccessible. Any ideas please folks?

When you say upgrading you mean inserting the disc whilst Me is running and doing an upgrade as opposed to a full install of xp ?

 

If so then I would advise a full install of xp pro otherwise you end up with quirky things and it being buggy.

 

Also you did not mention ( and am presuming here ) that your network uses dhcp.

As already mentioned (for future reference) I wouldn't do a Windows ME upgrade to XP. They operate differently in the background and it's highly recommended to format and install as new.

 

From what you're describing it sounds as though the computer is still a member of a workgroup and not your domain. To add XP to a domain is easy enough. Right click My Computer and choose 'Properties', choose the 'Computer Name' tab and click the 'Change' button to check.

Yeah, I remember sorting someone's home PC's out ages ago. They both had ME on, and I upgraded to XP. It seemed easy enough, but when XP first loaded I could see instantly the things that weren't working.

 

Ended up flattening them both completely with a fresh install of XP. That soon sorted things out!

You are better off wiping them and doing a clean install. I have never done a successful upgrade with ME on a machine.

I agree with that - going from a 9x platform ( Me included ) to an NT kernel platform such as xp or 2000 just does not work.
