upgrading memory on macbooks

hi anyone know anything about upgrading memory -RAM-on macbooks? Where best to get the memory, how easy is it? any places that will do it for you if pushed for time?

As you may or may not know, upgrading memory on a traditional laptop i.e running Windows for example is very easy to do.

 

On the underside of any laptop there are a few panels you can unscrew. One will contain the memory and usually supports upto two modules. You'll need to identify what type of memory it uses. It could be SD, DDR or DDR2 type memory and you'll need to identify the maximum amount of memory addressable. The Mac manual or a quick google of the model number should tell you this.

 

I've never performed a memory upgrade on a Mac, however I am working on the presumption the method is exactly the same.

Upgrading memory on a MacBook is pretty simple:

 

Take out the battery. Look around the inner edges of the battery opening, and you will see an L shaped metal bracket held in with screws. Undo the screws, and remove the L bracket. On the long edge, you should find the memory slots. Both slots may well already be occupied though. Obviously, you then remove the old memory, and slot the replacements into the vacated sockets. Finally, replace the L bracket, do the screws back up and put the battery back. Job done! :-)

Remove the battery, under that, there will be an L shaped piece of metal, running along the inside top and left of the battery space. Remove that (3 screws I think), and there will be two levers visible. gently pul these out, one at a time, and the existing RAM modules will slide out. Replace these, press them in, and push levers back in. Replace metal bit, and battery, and fire up mac book - check new ram has been recognised (Apple menu, about this mac), and enjoy.

 

Not completely certain, but I think Mac Books take PC2-5300 SO-Dim ram, but use the crucial memory checker tool at http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/drammemory.aspx to make sure.

 

As for actually purchasing the RAM, I bought a crucial 2 gig kit for my mac mini for about £45 from http://www.ebuyer.com recently, and had no problems, and also try http://www.aria.co.uk.
