hi , well tracert from both locations and compare- both time out within one or two hops. Net monitor- can you install and run it from a workstation (xp) on the network? then " To start a capture session in Network Monitor 3, click the Start Page tab, click Create a new capture tab, and then either click the Start Capture button, or press F10" and you say "A packet capture of the site loading and the stream failing would almost certainly prove illuminating" so you just - start capture then load the site , then stop capture-then what do you look for and where to see the expected data? thanks David

We have a specific problem with LGFL videocentral (https://videocentral.lgfl.org.uk ,and Perform-a-Poem) streaming in school (no problem at home)(no problem other videos such as youtube, bbc) specifically since 11th June. can get the actual videocentral site and thumbnails etc fine but the videos never start to stream or allow the video start button to work. Applies to all videos on videocentral- ours, public ones etc Streaming of videocentral videos at the school we "piggy back" on for broadband- works fine. The same specific problem (probably) also arose May 2012 and November 2011 All parties/services have been informed suggestions have been your network/a firewall/a proxy is not allowing streaming traffic. it's not a proxy issue /it is a Videocentral issue the school you piggy back from has a different IP address to you so there may be a routing issue reccomend look at your DNS configuration so that requests for this site are treated in the same way as the school which you piggy back on since they feed the internet to your school. Both of the two school networks are set up the same way. All clients look to the server for DNS requests and the forwarders within DNS on the server are set to DNS servers We have no firewall at our site. 1. any ideas? 2.any specific fault-finding can do from within school while attempting to get the videos to work

hi , has been working perfectly. went wrong today. when you touch screen the cursor sometimes moves where your finger goes, sometimes farther to left, thus opening unwanted programs. The usual orient screen and touching the red crosses does not work ie you cant touch them! the smart control panel on the laptop says board is working ok. it is dsplaying ok but not accurately interactive. all cables in . not used to these its not that hand wrongly angled though - what do i look for next? could it have been caused by child fiddling with board or damaging it somehow? thanks David

Hi the site I gave link to says it has enuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit Processor Intel® Pentium® Processor P6100 2.0 GHz, Level 3 cache 3 MB Intel® HM55 chipset Memory 4 GB DDR3 (2 x 2048 MB) 2 user accessible memory slots Supports up to 4 GB DDR3 memory Storage 500 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive 5400 rpm which sounds fine to me, and price good too might have to be rolled back to xp to be compatable with network and older progs at school most important perhaps is build quality, ie we have a hp printer and very flimsy recent hp laptops mostly fairly robust?

Hi would you reccommend HP G62 laptops to purchase for general teacher use at school and home? HP Laptops - HP G62-b00SA Laptop PC especially in terms of reliablility, but any other factors too thanks David

hi Dell 5100cn has died and would cost a lot to repair-out of warranty. 4 years ago it was £450 . it is stated as 25 pages per min and monthly duty cycle of 90k pages. However the 51 series now is Dell 5130CDN £799 45 pages per min and 110k pages per month. Not sure what our output is - 20 PCs on win2007 -xp network, but it is increasing. The figures give a comparison of robustness to print demand i suppose. The Dell 3130cn is only £439 (25 pages/min,70k pages per month), and the HP CP2025dn is £429 (20pages per min, 40k pages per month) but the HP CP2025dn we have on another 20 PCs only lasted 3 months before it had to be sent back and feels quite flimsy compared to the Dell 5100cn. Dell 5130CDN £799 vs Dell 3130cn £439 vs HP CP2025dn £429-advice?

hi buying laptops for school every few years, the processors have changed and it is hard to figure out what's a good deal. eg celeron may be inferior but the latest one may be faster than a two year old laptop with a processor that was better than celeron in its time and hence fine for a teacher's general use? eg Intel Core2 Duo T5450 @ 1.66GHz from a couple of years ago gets a passmark of 942 on PassMark - CPU Benchmarks - List of Benchmarked CPUs and Celeron Dual-Core T3100 @ 1.90GHz gets a mark of 1310 ie better... would you trust this website or are there other ref sources for people who can't keep all the processor types and models in their head? alternatively what are good value processors for a teacher's general use laptop at the moment?

so if you need 3 quotes for leasing ... 1.i assume you can specify makes of computers (even though some companies would prefer to lease you others, and others would be better "value") 1.I assume you dont need to justify what you then after seeing 3 quotes decide to go for to anyone in writing (or in triplicate) ?
-
Hi when you want to lease quite a lot of new equipment like a server and 20 pcs and you are in an ordinary LA school, do you have to get 3 quotes, or is this only when you buy new equipment outright. Someone says that under "best value" , we have to get 3 quotes for leasing- is that correct? thanks

ok thanks everyone,

hi if you were buying windows PCs for a new network now, with a windows server 2008 domain controller and 20 PCs for use in school curriculum, would you go for vista or xp? Xp is old, and support for it even on netbooks is planned to finish at some point, with windows 7 versions coming out (autumn 2009?) . Most educational software now has versions for vista, so would you still get vista PCs and roll back to xp or is it now better to use vista in the classroom?

Hi I understand that Ranger will not currently work with windows server 2008, but there will be an upgrade in spring 2009 which will. Does anyone else know more about this? will the upgrade also work with 64 bit standard version of windows server 2008? thanks David
-
Thanks. What about the amount of RAM? With 2GB standard in home PCs and 3 & 4 GB becoming more common in these, how long will 4GB be considered sufficient in a server like this? And considering Win server 2008? David

Hi what do you think of the following for a new curriculum (no sims etc)domain server spec for a 130 user -generated 150Gb data in last 3 year-school with 40 PCs on XP? most apps run from local programs on PCs. Hi , PC failing to load windows; safe mode & local login ->Dell diagnostics error code 0221 -chipset interval timer failed ater redoing the diagnostics error code 0146 -hard drive DST short test failed- DST log contains previous errors event viewer event ID: 51 "error detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during paging operation any idea? needs new motherboard or dodgy hard disk? thanks

I see you say the equipment can be bought for a nominal fee at the end of the lease under some leasing arrangements. Does this happen when leasing from Dell? why would you extend a lease? Do you get new equipment by doing this? From not a financial wizard.

hi as in the rest of thread we just had this problem of a degraded disk in a RAID array, and the poweredge 1800 beeping. Yes Dell Open Manage both allowed turning off beep and rebuilding the disk but although the indicator light on that disk is green now and the rebuilding went to 100% 1. the display in Dell Open Manage still says that disk is degraded 2.the column under "available RAID disk space" says 0GB for all 3 disks though there is 30 GB altogether actually free 3. event viewer is still showing warnings (event ID 2094)from server adminstrator saying "predictive failure reported-Array disk 0:1, controller 0, channel 0 users have been continuing to use the network throughout this any idea if we should believe the green light or the Dell Open Manage server administrator at this point?

the old network winnt server &win98 workstations had a cache box attached but they disconnected it as causing problems. For last 3 years network has been winserver 2003 & xp workstations. Cache box is still there, how do you know if it will work/does work? How do you test it/use it?
