Ocassionally theres updates like this that dont follow "the rules" I havent noticed this behaviour with the last batch of updates though. You best double check your policies just in case.

You dare to use windows update and expect it to go swimmingly? haha

 

I have not had that happen yet but i will look forward to it.

at the moment just worktstations.

yesterday my pc was updated automatically and i was bugged all day with the pop up asking whether i wanted to restart NOW or LATER - so i just did it at the end of the day - seems something is preventing this message appearing for the restricted student and teacher accounts. Will trawl through the policies first I think...

On Vista by default it'll restart 10minutes after the update has been installed. If you're at the computer then you can postpone it or set it to remind me in a set amount of time... Quite frustrating if you've left your computer on overnight for a reason!

Under Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then expand Windows Update.

 

No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates installations

 

This policy specifies that Automatic Updates will wait for the computer to be restarted by any user who is logged on to complete a scheduled installation. If this policy is not used, the computer restarts automatically.

 

I've set this to enabled - see what happens.

Yep got computers rebooting here as well even though we have a global policy not to!

 

Something in the latest update I think.

Must be that time of the month again....

 

Getting complaints this morning of pc's rebooting without warning...

 

Dug in to the GPO setting and found a few....anyone think these could cause the suppression of the question to reboot now or later?

Remove access to use all Windows Update features

Enabled

Lockdown - Staff, Pupils, Finance &GLOSCAT

 

and

 

Remove links and access to Windows Update

Enabled

Lockdown - Staff, Pupils, Finance &GLOSCAT

 

and

 

Configure Automatic Updates Enabled Default Domain Policy

Configure automatic updating: 4 - Auto download and schedule the install

The following settings are only required

and applicable if 4 is selected.

Scheduled install day: 0 - Every day

Scheduled install time: 02:00

further to my last post:

 

4 = Automatically download updates and install them on the schedule specified below

 

Specify the schedule using the options in the Group Policy Setting. If no schedule is specified, the default schedule for all installations will be everyday at 3:00 AM. If any of the updates require a restart to complete the installation, Windows will restart the computer automatically. (If a user is logged on to the computer when Windows is ready to restart, the user will be notified and given the option to delay the restart.)

Is this our old friend the system user? Under XPSP2 - or at least RM's implementation of it - processes running as the system user don't interact with the user (hence why RM's print credits stopped telling users they couldn't print). If Windows Update is being run by the system, not the user, it will be suppressing the messages but still do the count down, thus the PC will reboot seemingly without warning.

Now I think about it, I remember that it is an MS "feature" not an RM one. IIRC, MS felt that because it can be a potential security risk, they're going to block it wholesale rather than try and find a decent solution. Kind of like banning the sale of cars because they might be used for a hit-and-run.

 

Unless you can time your updates so that they only go out a time that the reboots won't affect people, I'm not sure there's much you can do about it.

I don't seem to have the setting to which you refer - or I am being a dumb ass :D
