Obviously, we need to protect the equipment from flying balls etc! We are based in Essex, any suggestions as to who I might approach to quote for this work. Many thanks

howartp Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 A sports hall I saw somewhere a couple of years ago had projector inside a box at high ceiling height - it was motorised to drop-down to viewing height when needed. No idea where I saw it or who did it.

antlear Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 That rather surprises me that Stage electric have said that. Installations in a sports hall can be quite fun. There are ways and means to do them and things to put equipment in. Audio is the most difficult as sports halls have really bad acoustics. What are they wanting to use audio for? If the audio is for speech then this makes it more fun as the louder it gets in there the less clear the speech will be. So for example if you have 1000 people you don't want 2 speakers at the front blasting volume, you will want a distributed system with more speakers covering the width /length of the room. So i am guessing that you have identified a wall that you want to use as the projection area. One option could be to have a ultra short throw projector which would be 1 closer to the wall and 2 easier to build a cage for. You could then have a electric drop down screen. There are various options to have the projector on a dropdown method. If you had a fixed projector in the middle of a room in a cage you would want it not on a single pole as if cage gets knocked then this would much it on the pole and take it out of alignment. From an audio point I would me more inclined to go with tight in the corner potentially looking at options from K Array Install Hope that helps if you want any help feel free to message me.

We have a good standalone setup, with the audio very much as you describe, and two floor mounted projectors and screens. The solution works well but is a pain to set up every month so we are looking for an installed solution....

I am really surprised that stage electrics have declined. Did you contact there HQ in Bristol? I would contact them again if I was you. They have quoted me for some work.

Andrew_C Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Not really all that odd. They may be busy, but they may also view your requirements as a good way to ulcers and dissatisfied customers. A sports hall will never sound good, and if people pay £lots for an install they will expect good sound.
Griff Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 I used Admiral Audio Visual Home | Admiral at my last place based out of Luton, they were really good did a back-lit projector tab tension screen no sound system for us but they do all of that as well. Engineers are really experienced and some of the hardest working blokes I have met.
Crumpet Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 (edited) We have a trolley with a laptop/projector that we wheel out for assemblies. The wall is painted white so there's no need for a screen. It's not perfect but it does the job. However, The head of PE is a dumbass. He went out and bought a 50inch TV for his apple TV to put on the wall in the sports hall. We have this set up for when the main hall is booked (Our main hall has a ceiling mounted projector and wall controlled drop down screen) Our projector is mounted on to a adjustable trolley with castors, which is great for wheeling to and from different rooms. As for sound, the projector does have good sound quality but only useful for if say a classroom situation, but if we do require extra sound boost we have 2 large speakers which can be put on to a trolley and wheeled in and set up with soundboard/mixing deck to manage inputs.
jimmy_2k Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 In my last school, we fitted the speakers behind the basketball hoops and pulled the hoops down to expose the speakers if we were doing any events. I also had a Epson ultra short throw projector installed and had a local fabricator manufacture a cage to fit over the top to protect it, at a cost of £350. Head of PE thought it would last 2 weeks. 6 months later when I left the school it was still going strong. The only exposed bit will obviously be directly underneath for the lens. Worth considering and didn't cost the earth.

Ask for Tommie he was a massive help! Wasn't to expensive either- and didn't care when I made last minute changes to the order on the day of installation.

I'd recommend a caged projector (we fit these in sport halls and never had any issues), electric screen and around 6-10 JBL control speakers spaced evenly either side of the sports hall pointing to the middle, then use the mixer channels A and B to stop the sound bouncing around too much. These are cracking speakers, light, easy to install, cheap and pack an incredible punch!

I have seen the cadge get knocked a couple of times but the projector is still in the same position and working fine.
