@X-13 Why can't you use the cards to sign in and out instead of barcodes? I think fire register would be a decent reason to make the kids have ID cards, if you coupled it with RFID chips/readers to log who was in the building that day.. But I can't see it reliably working.

How? They'd have to leave their card in the door (Gets stolen) or take it out (Gets locked again) or use it as a key to lock/unlock (Room left unlocked)

 

I'd think student ID cards below college-level would definitely be defaced.. Photos scratched off, an impromptu meeting with a belt sander, mandatory penis drawings, etc.

 

If the doors are held closed by maglock, card unlocks the door, door lock behind everyone, to exit you press a button. Salto handles same thing but inside handle always allows opening.

 

Alternatively timed periods could be used so that door is re-locked at end of each lesson period.

 

We used cards for multiple purposes, follow me printing, cashless catering & library as well as door access for staff.

 

Charged for replacements for lost/stolen deliberately damaged/defaced cards.

The RFID cards? Because it doesn't work that way apparently...

All I want is the ability to ping the RFID cards from the WiFi and find out where the butts people are when I'm trying to find them...

Not going to work passive rfid cards need to be close to the reader in order for the chip to get energised some companies do long range tags for automatic doors but I would guess they are powered but still rfid frequencies are not the same as wifi.

 

However this do seem to be straying off the original premise.

All Staff and 6th Form, We have a Photo, name, form (for students) and Rank (Sixth Form, Staff, Contractor, Head...). The bar-code has no use any more, but was for the Library system. We have left it there with the Users login name below.

Staff, sixth formers and all visitors are issued with one. The students come in uniform so there isn't a pressing need for them to have a form of ID. Those who do have one the card also doubles as both library and canteen card.

I now work for the University of Southampton and we use our ID cards for EVERYTHING. Building/Door access (staff have higher levels of door access than undergrads and other students), cashless catering, bus passes, club and society access, printing, Library loans, etc. Super handy. I know a lot of people have an irrational fear of ID cards 'cause 'Big Bruvva iz watchin' but to me they represent convenience and safety. I love having an ID card.

Like I said on another thread, I rather feel my photo suggests I may be missing a can of special brew and a park bench.

 

This is MiFare enabled card, but we don't use it for anything yet. We have separate fobs for our door entry systems although this will apparently change in the summer.

 

Also. I have mad skillz at paint!

Thank you all for your fine responses.

 

For staff we use a mixture of Mifare 1k and magstripe cards (we upgraded all our staff magstripe cards with RFID tags stuck on them to allow for contactless) for support staff sign in, door entry and various other goodies. Still looking at rolling out cashless school system* which of course then each student would be given one (also removes the stigma relating to FSM) - Got a few design ideas in my head but thanks to all who provided a design!

 

* catering, trips, uniform, other payments

You could use the ID cards as a registration tool. I know loads of schools use them to count class attendance. You could also use them in an e-timetable way with contactless readers and flat screen monitors where a student places their card and they get told where they should be, in which lesson, with a little campus map and any outstanding homework. Win.

Consider it built! To be honest it wouldn't be that difficult here, we already provide students with their timetables via mobile app and via intranet, homework is all published online via wordpress so grab all that out, already use RFID readers so WIN!

LOL Nope. Although as @SovietRussia points out, many places have these systems in place, they just need tying into a lookup system based on the NFC/RFID chip. Call it a 'Castle in the sky'.

It would also be REALLY COOL. Lots of places do an ID Card login service - no more forgotten passwords. Think of the possibilities that open up to you with ID cards....

This is why I am a fan of them and I hope we (school) will use them more and more.

Clearly the only viable solution is augmenting their palms with RFID tokens.
