sparkeh Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 That bbc article demonstrates just how difficult it is to understand what the parties are talking about and where the truth lies. Both right and left wing parties spending plans, to a greater or lesser extent, are driven by ideology and different statistics can be found to validify their argument.
pcstru Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 As usual with economics it sounds like it very much depends on your perspective. They could all be referring to differently adjusted figures/stats regarding the deficit so potentially could all be right/wrong Even if you could agree objectively on what has happened over the last 5 years (or more) there is no guarantee that that will be a good predictor of future performance. So yes, it is a matter of forming your opinion. It's not even a case that one policy will work while another will fail. They might all fail or they might all succeed.
tmcd35 Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 I can see why Cameron wanted to avoid these debates: he looks tired and diminished. Cameron looked way out of his comfort zone. To my mind, after Farage who came across has if he was interviewing for leader of the BNP, Cameron came of worst in this debate. However the real loser was Clegg, the 'honest peace broker' 'bit' looks broken now. I think he's just in an unfortunate position. Most of the time he was talking the most sense - if you call the 'honest peace broker' so be it. Just watched the debate. I hope there is a SNP candidate in my Kent constituency Lol, here! here! Personally I think Milliband would do well with a minority government should LD, SNP and Plaid Cyrmu each get enough sets to keep the Tories and UKIP at bay and keep Labour from over spending. That's the outcome I'm hoping for this time. 1
flyinghaggis Posted April 4, 2015 Posted April 4, 2015 https://fullfact.org/2015/apr/10_claims_7_leaders_debate-41361 Lies, damned lies, and statistics!
pcstru Posted April 4, 2015 Posted April 4, 2015 https://fullfact.org/2015/apr/10_claims_7_leaders_debate-41361 Lies, damned lies, and statistics! A lot of that seems quite pedantic - with the politicians being close to or entirely understandable in the intent.
speckytecky Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 Good Poll. Thank you. However, here we are at 13 pages and only 124 Edugeek Members have bothered to vote. We either have far more 'overseas' members than I realised or on the other hand let's hope it's not a case of 'can't be bothered' This is the first election in modern times where even under The First Past The Post system every vote is likely to count. Doubtful that any of the so called 'Safe' seats are actually safe this time round (well except Mr Burcowe's)
pcstru Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 I haven't voted yet because I'm genuinely undecided. Perhaps others are in the same boat?
Kitkatninja Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 I will be voting for the Christian Democratic Union of Germany so that Angela Merkel to be next MP of the UK

elsiegee40 Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 I very much doubt that Tonbridge &Malling, majority 18.5k, is at risk of going to any other party in the next century
Andrew_C Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 Doubtful that any of the so called 'Safe' seats are actually safe this time round (well except Mr Burcowe's)Last time round we were a Lib Dem seat, the Nasty Party hold it now. According to the 38Degree website, the Tories are on 99% to win, and everyone else at less than 1%. My vote will count for nothing.
StevieM Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 I very much doubt that Tonbridge &Malling, majority 18.5k, is at risk of going to any other party in the next century Nor Bootle, with a 21,181 majority. (Although that is lower than the 29,442 majority they had in 1992 - but then again, so was the turnout!) That said, we do have a Green Party candidate this time so at least there's someone I can vote for instead of spoiling my ballot paper like I usually have to.
MatthewL Posted April 6, 2015 Author Posted April 6, 2015 I've been sat here reading this and bits online and I am still undecided if any I am going to vote for. I don't feel there is much good by any of them, well certinally my view.
speckytecky Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 Have a go at this at least please https://voteforpolicies.org.uk i disagree that there are no safe seats. id lay odds 75/80% of seats wont change and probably never will. there are some seats that matter most dont 1
StevieM Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 Have a go at this at least please https://voteforpolicies.org.uk Wow! I knew I was more attuned to Green Party policies than the others, but I scored 100% Green Party! Tree-hugger? Looks more like I'm after a good, hard tree-snog! 1
CAM Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 That poll is messing with us swapping the colours of the top two.
Popular Post tech_guy Posted April 7, 2015 Popular Post Posted April 7, 2015 (edited) Please don't vote UKIP - Farage is a spoilt little rich boy with no real political experience playing at politics. He likes to portray himself as a bloke you can have a laugh, a smoke and a drink with down the local pub but in reality he's just a scheming racist bigot. He needs to go back to the 1950s where he belongs. Edited April 7, 2015 by tech_guy 5
sonofsanta Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 I've not voted in the poll because I don't know who I'm voting for yet. On the topic of safe seats, I just checked Wikipedia, and the last time someone won here without being a Tory was... 1923. The General Elections of 1922 & 1923 went to a Liberal, and other than that it's Tories all the way back to 1885. I am surprised by just how much I agree with Labour's policies on Health.
tmcd35 Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 According to the news last night both Norwich constituencies are major battle grounds this time, so I guess my vote will count! (I claim the deciding vote of the election!) I'm in Norwich North and incumbent Tory Chloe Smith with a 9.3% majority, I don't think she'll hold it this time. Looking at Wiki were were Tory from '83 to '97 then Labour '97 to '09. My gut says we'll swing back to Labour this time, the LibDem swing voters like me will return back and bolster the Labour numbers.
speckytecky Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 My gut tells me that 2015 will see the political map of the UK changed forever. Labour and the Tories are going to see 'safe seats' fall to unexpected quarters. In my local area I'd be totally surprised if the swing barometer Bristol West doesn't go green - fabulous candidate. With the Lib Dem Ledgend Don Foster standing down, I'd again follow the outcome of Bath with deep interest - the Green Party has another very strong candidate there. North Wiltshire also could easily go Green with high profile Green veteran University Lecturer Phil Chamberlain running an extremely strong campaign against the, in my opinion odious sitting Conservative James Gray. Miscbrah Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 We haven't even got onto TTIP yet. Gosh, the Greens suddenly seem more appealing.
CAM Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 I think it will end up a narrow Labour victory as people will vote for them as the most likely party to kick Conservatives out of government. The Tories themselves will come second due to their large backing regardless of how hated they are right now, but not without shocks in key constituencies. Sadly I live in a Tory stronghold so I doubt much will change! The biggest upset in my predictions will be the Lib Dems coming fourth behind UKIP as Farage is upsetting enough of the apple cart to attract protest votes and the coalition combined with Clegg's perceived impotence has, in my eyes, damaged the Lib Dems somewhat. SNP will clean up in Scotland and the recent independence vote may also give a second wind to nationalists in Wales propping up Plaid Cymru for more devolution. BNP I am expecting to collapse entirely and lose the few wards they picked up.
