Keyboard driver issue (Win7 x86 Enterprise)

Hi,

 

Has anyone experienced this issue where the keyboard randomly does not respond when you boot into Windows? It doesn't happen all the time, and a workaround is to simply swap USB ports or restart the computer. I have already ruled out chipset drivers and plugging it only into USB2 ports. But I still get this problem occurring randomly.

 

Everytime this problem occurs, it generates this in the System Event Log:

 

The driver \Driver\kbdhid failed to load for the device HID\VID_413C&PID_2107\7&d61bc65&0&0000

 

Event ID 219

 

The model where it occurs the most on is a Dell Optiplex 9010 AIO but it has also occurred on other Dell Optiplex models too.

 

The Windows image has the usual basic stuff like Office and Adobe reader, and the mice and keyboard are basic generic Dell models.

 

Any ideas?

We had a similar issue with a specific model of HP machines, but only where they had a mismatch between USB and PS2 input devices (ie. PS2 Keyboard, USB Mouse). Unfortunately our issue came down to an issue with the bios so we couldn't resolve it beyond pairing USB with USB and PS2 with PS2. We also didn't see an entry in the event log, so it's probably not likely that this is the same issue.

I also ruled out the BIOS update too. That didn't make a difference either.

try copying the kbdhid.sys from a working machine and see if it continues to occur. I had a similar problem with mice and it turned out to be some sort of corruption on the digital signature.

 

You can also try and sfc /scannow and see if that helps.

I compared the kbdhid.sys file from my office PC to the affected machine. I did a checksum calculation on both versions of the file, and they both check out identical. SFC showed no integrity issues.

 

I got the latest chipset drivers from Dell's website - although the USB3 driver on Intel's website is newer than Dell's. One thing I couldn't find on Intel's website however, is an updated driver for the Intel® 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller 1E26/1E2D. The current driver date is 26/08/2011 (version 9.3.0.1011).

Have you tried a USB 2 instead of USB 3 port ?

The problem occurs on whatever port you plug it into - we avoid using the USB3 port whenever possible. Unplugging the keyboard and plugging into another port whether it is 2 or 3 provides a temporary workaround, but it doesn't fix the problem.

This month I've started to have this issue with some zoostorm machines so making think maybe windows update issue or driver via windows update as been fine for last year .
