Disk Full!

First of a few threads today from me I'm afraid.

 

Why is nothing ever simple? Come in today to find that on the server or one and only server that does everything. I have 8Gb out of 50Gb free on the c drive which is ok but over the last week the teachers have dumped a load of crud on the d drive so this morning I have 2.8Gb free of 228Gb. There was about 12Gb free last week which I was hoping to limp by with until I implement the new server over Summer;

I know technically your supposed to keep 10%? free for paging and to help performance. I have spoke to the business manager and shown her the WinDirStats info, now we have asked them to do house keeping on there files for months now and they have not done anything. My plan was to go and tidy some stuff up, but looking at it things are not organised efficiently like in on teachers folder there is trip 2009-10 which you think could be deleted but in that folder there is another folder called trips 2012-13.

Anyways Business manager said leave it, however I'm concerned what will happen if the drive does fill up. Will it just be a case of if they come to save then it will say disk full or will the server fall over etc?

 

Is there anything that can go through the server, (as we have 50gb of jpegs 21Gb of mp4's and 7Gb mp3's) , and reduce the quality of the jpegs?

 

Think when the new system comes in I will be cracking down disk quoter and file types.

There are loads of "bulk resize" jpeg utilities. I have used Irfanview, but didn't just point it at a drive. I do recall one that could do that, but can't remember the name.

 

Can't the school afford an external drive? (Or have you got a caddy/old drive kicking about?) That way you could pull off any old files but still have them to hand in the unlikely event of them ever being needed.

 

P.S. I find JDisk Report presents results in a "clearer for teachers" format.

 

 

P.P.S. I've also used an old desktop + FreeNAS in a similar situation.

I've used FastStone Photo resizer which you can point at a top level directory and it will resize all photos in the folders below. FastStone Photo Resizer - Powerful Image Converter/Resizer

Yeah I 'Archive' stuff off on an external USB drive.

 

Also to find the perpetrators use Tree Size Free - TreeSize Free - Quickly Scan Directory Sizes and Find Space Hogs

 

Might help you find where most of the data is.

Do a *.* search on the drive by size, and archive off older, huge stuff. May help you to limp on for a while. We had the same issue with student and staff home drive storage - moving to quotas and FSRM sorted it.

I found about 16GB of dodgy films on the server too... deeeeeeeee -lete!

File Server Resource Manager. Allows the easy and flexible application of quotas, works off the Owner attribute so works fine for shares. Can also restrict file types etc, like .exe.
