I have a slightly old HP 2524 switch that has a j4131a module in it. Is there a cable I can buy that has RJ45 on the other end so I can link two switches together at a Gig speed?

The j4131a is fibre transceiver so without an active unit that itself converts fibre to rj45 then no, if the switches are in the same cab you can also buy a gigabit stacking module but you will need 2 one for each switch.

HP also did a stacking kit for these switches as well, i expect these will pop up on ebay.

You have two choices really -

Either buy an LC to SC cable like this or replace the module with a 100/1000T module as illustrated above and link with Ethernet.

To be honest however, the money you're going to spend on cables/modules, a modern/basic HP Gigabit switch is probably going to be very comparable in price. I'm not sure the throughput on the 2524 would be 'true' Gigabit, despite advertising that it is connecting at this speed.

Buy the stacking kit if you can get it at a reasonable price, the stacking kit has a connection speed of 6Gbps if I recall correctly, obviously don't spend more than a new switch would be as others have said.
