SimpleSi Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 If you follow me on twitter you'll know I'm very excited over a new device from Redfern Electronics called the Crumble Crumble Controller | Redfern Electronics Its a VERY cheap (£10) board that has simply 4 digiatal/analogue I/Os and 2 bi-directional motor outputs. It is like a cut-down £99 flo-go box (Don't get me wrong - the flo-go is brilliant but is software is outdated) You can connect to it using croc clips or 4mm bananna plugs (which most primaries have loads of stuff from the old days) Even better - it comes with a Scratch type block programming interface so its super easy to program Betterer still - it remembers the program so you can make standalone devices Did I mention its only £10? And the best news is that Redfern are going to make it so that someone can write a Scratch interface for it. Guess who???? Video here from Mr Sandwich Maker himself Sorry - this is Crumble video Junior Computer Science from Phil Bagge 4
pete Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 We've had a few in on demo here and everyone likes them.
AdamzB Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Sounds great @SimpleSi but what happens when they release a newer version without telling you? 1

SimpleSi Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 Sounds great @SimpleSi but what happens when they release a newer version without telling you? Then the Dogs of War will be unleashed!!!! However, not likely to happen as, unlike another small board manufacturer, Mr Crumble is keeping me in the loop From email yesterday "Also, I needs to get Crumbs finished - these are i2c expansion boards that connect to A and B (and + and -)." And I already want a MegaCrumble with more I/O ports Simon I just don't know where I get this bad reputation from?
mats Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Looks rather like Scratch4Arduino to me. With slightly easier connections but without the Open Sores schematics & goodness.
SimpleSi Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 Looks rather like Scratch4Arduino to me. The language is like that But several advantages over Arduino for primaries 1. You can connect to it using croc clips - much more child friendly than breadboards and schools usually have them already 2. You can connect legacy DataHarvest Flo-Go hardware shuch as switches/LEDS/LDRs - a lot of schools have boxes full of them 3. "Driverless install" It seems to think its some sort of keyboard/mouse and every computer I've tried it on just installs it without fuss or bother - Massive plus over Arduino Simon

Do you know if it is protected against shorts on the outputs and reverse polarity on the supply? I see no schematic!
SimpleSi Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 The manufacturers are pretty confident that it'll survive - when I get a 2nd one - I'll try and blow the 1st one up Simon 1
SimpleSi Posted March 30, 2015 Author Posted March 30, 2015 Just started down the route of a sort of cross-translator and managed to get it to convert a Scratch 2 .sb2 file into a Crumble .crm file (an .sb2 file is a zip file containg a project.json file and a .crm is just an xml file) Need to work on it being a bit more automagical but I think the same principle can be used for #Arduinos as well Simon

Back in the days I got into MIDI, then Desktop Video now a bit of both when I get the time, how is it every hobby I choose involves Computers, I just can't seem to get away from them
