Edu-IT Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 This might be a daft question... but, here goes. It's Friday after all. If I run a cable from a POE switch and terminate it into a socket. Is that socket then able to deliver POE? I suspect the answer is no it's not that simple.

plexer Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 If the switch port you have plugged it in to supplies poe then yes, not all ports on all poe switches deliver power. Then when you plug in a poe compatible device it will negotiate with the switch to get power. Ben
beancole Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 yes it will work - HOWEVER - be careful with PoE, if you buy a 48 port PoE switch it wont necessarily be able to power 48 devices. That's the only pitfall I nearly fell into once.
Edu-IT Posted March 6, 2015 Author Posted March 6, 2015 It does have a POE port, yes. So I can run a cable internally to a socket. Terminate that then for the shorter distance use external grade cabling to go outside to the AP and it'll get the power it needs?

Michael Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Yes - it will work, but the more junction points you have, there's a higher risk of it not working. Regardless if you're operating at 10/100 or 1000 all four pairs need to be terminated correctly.

rob_coles Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 As long as the run length isn't too long it should work. I managed to get Poe delivered to an access point at 1gb working perfectly at 144 meters. Not that I would advise it of course. It was only when we tested it with a fluke we realised how long the run was.

Apologies for being vague - I just meant that if all four pairs aren't patched, then you will get problems. Normally you'd just have one long run, so it's less of an issue, but having multiple junction points can make correcting problems more difficult. PoE will work up to 100m as per the standard CAT5/CAT6 specs, so you're well within limits.

PotNoodleTech Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 (edited) Yep as long as it's wire up properly then it should work up to ~70m away. I wouldn't run at more than 50-60m as you lose power to the device because of the cable length, so if you ran 100m runs you may end up with the device not functioning correctly. As peeps above have mentioned, you need to look at the switch power handling, then look at your POE powered devices power handling and that will tell you how many devices you can run off that one switch. E.g. if a 48 port switch can supply 200w continuous over POE, and each POE powered device uses 10 watts, then you can only plug up to 20 POE devices into that switch.
