Mr_Jiminy Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 We're seriously considering recommending Unifi WAPs for all our small scale organisation infrastructures. Can I just ask what sort of POE switches people are opting for to use with Unifi WAPs?

For UAP-Pros any 802.3af switch, and for UAP-AC any 802.3at compliant switch will be fine. If you fit the standard points, you either need a toughswitch from Ubiquiti or use their injectors. They use a none standard 24 volts. [edit] I've used pro APs on netgear and HP PoE switches without any issues. 1

Of course running the toughswitches (doesn't even have to be those, Ubuiqiti now do a range of standard switches up to 48 port that also handle 24v and standard POE which may help tidy it up) 1

m25man Posted February 13, 2015 Posted February 13, 2015 (edited) Standard = 2.4ghz 24v Passive not compatible with normal .af PoE Pro = 2.4ghz + 5 Ghz dual band uses standard .af PoE switches AC = Dual Band .ac compliant requires a high power rated .at compliant PoE switch. Note the Unifi AC Mk II hardware has a lower power consumption and will run quite happily on a standard .af switch UNLESS you load it! With 100 clients on high power these will draw 27w so check your switches power budgets before overloading it with too many AC wireless points. Ps, we regularly get 300+ users on our Unifi APs. The ToughSwitch comes as either 5 port, 8 port, or 2x 8 ports in a rack chassis together. Alternatviely there are the EdgeSwitches or UniFi switches that come in 24 and 48port varieties. 1

According to the specs they support 802.3af/at (PRO and AC access points) and passive POE (for the standard UAPs). 1

Just trying to place an order with them tested my patience. Instead I cancelled and went with LinITX who were just great and are actually the UK importers of unifi kit - they sell it on to 4gon. We've used them for lots of networking things at this point - core switches, fibre, room cabling... They also send you a bar of Dairy Milk at Easter

Zero hand off is very useful for time sensitive applications such as VoIP - however it's not a game changer for me. I suspect AC APs will have ZHO soon enough for those that require it.
