I approve! A few years ago I decided to swap my main home desktop for a Mac Mini as I wanted a change. Fixing Windows PCs at work all day, then coming home to more Windows related issues! I've had hardly any issues with it.

I bought a late 2009 model off eBay, upgraded the RAM to 8GB, added a 128GB SSD and put the original HDD in the CD bay. It runs OS X 10.10 fine, and I even play a few Steam games on it (although with lower detail settings and lower res :( ). I think the time might be coming for me to get a newer computer but with the new Mac Mini having soldered RAM it's really put me off :(

Thanks for proving my point that haters look just as stupid as fanbois to [relatively] balanced folk :)

I think it's very naive to think that some people are "just balanced" and love all products the exact same as a personal opinion. I don't think this can be done, especially in the technological battle that manufacturers and now consumers are all involved in like it or not, it's a marketing technique that manufacturers have played upon so they can benefit. Whether people like to think their balanced for an ego-boost or whether it's for a review etc... it doesn't matter, everyone has their preferences to all tech, some like android, some like Windows, some like iOS more than the other it doesn't matter how you look at it even if you have all devices you're going to use one more than the other and thats the brand your most loyal too as you will become more engrossed into that eco-system for whatever reasons you feel is right, then comes the preaching to others why your device is better and the circle continues.

With me it's Android and Windows, though at one point it used to be iOS and Windows everyone has a preference and at both points I've argued the case for iOS and I've argued the case for android dependent on what I own at the time. This is natural your backing up a company you've chosen to be heavily invested into. It's like if I was to come to your school and say your network isn't as good as mine because X, Y & Z you can say that you'd look at it balanced and fairly though you wouldn't you'd argue that yours is better because it's something you've invested your time and funds into no matter what the actual facts are. Difference is you could get a third party involved that could do an inspection of both our networks to find which one on paper is best by comparing speeds etc... With companies like Apple & Microsoft who dominate the marketplace in terms of computing it has effected everyone and everyone has their preference regarding to which brand they like to follow because they are the dominants so you'll never get an end result of which one is actually better than the other, people will just keep fighting with no actual conclusion and this is good because it's something that plays a heavy part of marketing for both companies and keeps the competition going for the consumer.

Bottom line to say someone is balanced and likes both eco-systems the same and use both systems equally is rubbish, everyone prefers one over the other, there's no escaping the manufacturer battle that both Windows & Apple have and everyone deep down has a side they prefer. Arguing about which is best is healthy for the consumer and manufacturer so being a fanboy might not be as stupid as you might think just look at the comments on that video, it's benefitted both companies and these guys work for Microsoft so I say good job, I'm sure they knew what they where doing when releasing this video. If one company did everything there wouldn't be competition and nothing would ever progress in terms of hardware or software, it's a good thing in my books just another take on the situation, it's easy to just sit back and think "fanboy idiots" when really there's a reason behind it all and a good reason at that.

1) Apple Refurb Store

2) KRCS - they normally have ex demo or refurbed stock etc

3) Amazon

4) EBay - although I would take your time and go through ebay items to ensure that the seller has a store and all the usual stuff to ensure you don't get ripped off / conned etc.

Pay by credit card if possible, if you can't then get one of those credit cards where you pay the cash onto it and that way you should have a bit more protection on any purchases or maybe use someone elses credit card and give them the cash for buying the item for you ?

As above purchase one from 2012 or there abouts, the newer macs as far as I am aware ( on at least some of the models are set as what ever you purchase at the time ) so if you buy a mac mini with 4gb of ram and an i5 cpu then you can't upgrade it versus if its a slightly older model like 2012 or there abouts then I believe they should be a bit more upgradable.

@Arthur and a few others might be able to correct me if I am wrong and or give you some other better advise / suggestions etc ?

By being balanced I did not mean love everything equally. I was talking about 'balanced' in the wider sense of being a balanced person and not having to either love or hate everything.

For instance, personally I dislike Apple products. There are a number of reasons for this, cost being one of them. I am highly unlikely to buy an Apple product unless some future job requires it for these reasons. However, that is my personal opinion. The difference between having a personal opinion and being a fanboi/hater, is that I can state my opinion, give advice based on it, and leave it at that. Fanbois/haters won't accept that anyone else has a different opinion; they'll ridicule, belittle and snark at anyone who disagrees. They'll swear 'The Company' makes absolutely the best/worst products in the world, and they'll keep on and on at someone who disagrees, like their nagging is going to somehow enlighten them because, after all, their opinion transcends mere opinion, it is divine fact.

So no, I don't believe it's naive to believe somebody can have an opinion without metaphorically screaming it in the face of anyone who disagrees; I believe the word is 'mature'.

Why choose one over the other if you can have all platforms :p

Exactly!

I dislike apple as a brand, but you can't deny that their products are nice to use. Buying second hand means my money didn't go directly to them... so win win really!

Put words into anyone else mouth but mine. Did I say that everyone is a Fanboy of one brand or another? No. Did I say I didn't believe somebody can have an opinion without screaming it in the face of others? No.

So don't make out like I have.

You said that haters and fanboys are stupid, that's fine and your opinion but I was just trying to shed some light on why that isn't essentially just the case. There is a big reason to why so called "haters" & "Fanboys" can help in the development of systems between manufacturers and provide a good marketing technique that eventually benefits the end consumer in the long run. Whether you want to shout your mouth off or not about what you believe is right is up to you, but by just stating "there idiots" I don't think is fair as the war I believe does more good in the end run, so I say fight on and enjoy it. YOLO and all that....

Thanks @matt40k but I've already bought a second hand one on eBay for £300. Shipped this morning.

Why does every apple based thread everywhere always have to descend into anarchy. sigh.

Tell me about it. The thread has served its purpose for me so I'm leaving it at that.

Yep - a used apple that is cheaper and like you say the money doesn't go to apple directly and it's a win win situation ( at least imo )

Don't know whose post you read, but I have not put words in to anybody's mouth, merely responded to you by further explaining my stance.

You said that haters and fanboys are stupid *SNIP* but by just stating "there idiots" I don't think is fair

Ignoring the irony of this next paragraph, no, I didn't. I said fanbois/haters were irritating (and I doubt anyone would disagree), but I certainly didn't call anyone stupid.

aaaanddd.... done. :)

Well my shiny MacBook Air turned up this morning. Not a picture of one!

I am extremely happy with it, especially with its weight. Thankyou to everyone who contributed.
