I am going down the similar road, find myself wanting a MBP Ret after using our iMac in work with iPad deployment, nicer look and feel than windows (accepted arguments being costs and so on)

Just wanted to point out this is codswallop - I've been using a US MBP for years and have never had any problems with the App store. Why would a laptop be limited to a certain region? The hardware (keyboard aside) is identical.

 

Just repeating what I've been told by a Mac user. As you say could be total rubbish.

 

TL;DR - the EU screwed our electronics (though it's probably for the greater good), but some manufacturers still aren't dealing with it well.

 

Exactly "some" manufacturers aren't dealing with it well and in this case it's Apple and Apple's fault for not performing proper quality checks on their products, add up the premium you pay for Apple and you'd of thought this wouldn't be an issue...But it is none the less, in my book that's not the EU's fault it's Apples.

My Dell here is fine and is 3 years old not had any problems and was half the price with better specs.

LOL I have a self enforced limit of £50 on eBay, I just don't trust buying anything of expensive value from there, its the wild west of shopping :) same for Amazon Marketplace and ye olde play.com (though thats probably circling the plughole these days)

Be careful if your planning on upgrading it with after market parts. Got the school to buy a Samsung SSD for a MacBook Pro 13"... It fitted but disk utility really didn't like it and would crash the system to a restart when trying to format it. This happened on all of the 20 MacBook's we have. Put it in a Windows machine and all was fine so wasn't the SSD.

 

Did you check compatibility before ordering? It does make a difference!

No me either to be honest but the chap selling it seemed really genuine and in our messages back and forth has been very helpful and polite. Should be here by Friday!

Yup, not truth in this. I used a 2009 US MBP for four years with absolutely no problems - Well until the GFX Card gave out, but even then, popping the Logic board in the oven for ten minutes fixed it good :)

If you shop around you can get some great deals. I just knocked together a whole new Gaming PC with stuff mostly off of ebay and amazon, got some great deals and i've got a ridiculously good system now.

I've bought lots of expensive things on eBay, at one point spent over £1,000 on an Alienware off eBay. Since their policies have changed where if the buyer is not satisfied or has a problem with the order eBay will refund them the whole amount I'm not too worried at all when buying things of high value off eBay.

That is not the main argument at all. I have been using Windows for the last 15 years, I'd like to experience what OSX / Mac has to offer as I've had a nice experience with it at work.

 

I am in no way an Apple fanboy, I'm just curious to try it. If I don't like it, I already have a buyer for the Air.

Very good video, don't know if people know about it but it's basically Ubuntu with the look and feel of Mac OS X.

 

Apple predominantly uses Samsung Components in their Macs so don't be fooled, they don't have a better standard of components, it's basically a Samsung, we've had many go wrong here only after a year old 1 had logic board problems the other where HDD issues or keyboard issues.

 

£300 odd isn't bad though what's the specs? i5? If so that's not a bad bargain.

 

hmm, I am hoping soon there will be a Linux distro similar to wine that will allow you to run OSX applications.So I don't have to spend a fortune on a mac just to supervise iPads that will be used in MDM anyway. I believe there is something called the Darling Project working on it!

It's not that at all. I like the look, feel and the trackpad especially on my MBP. If you have the money and it is what you want, then why not buy EXACTLY what you want. I've not laid hands on a laptop yet that has a touchpad like a mac...

To be honest even though I'm probably deemed "a hater" of Apple products on here, I'm not and would probably buy one for home use but only because they're more like a fashion accessory and I have my proper gaming rig at home as a main machine.

Seriously, I think a good mixture of advice has been given in this thread, but some people will just hate anything with an Apple logo on it regardless of the facts. Both good and bad points have been pointed out to the OP and they've made their decision, so if you have nothing further to add, why bother? How does it affect your life that the OP has bought something you wouldn't? It's their money, they can do what they like with it.

 

EDIT: yes, I am aware of the irony of this post.

That's just stupid.

It just shows how stupid fanboism (if that's a word) is. Thing is though companies love it, the Battle between companies like Samsung & Apple, Sony & Microsoft, Microsoft & Apple, creates a fan base for a particular brand and keeps profit coming in for the companies. If you look Apple has the most rival companies compared to other brands and thus has the greatest sale value and profits, surely that can't be a coincidence!

 

Look at the comments, it's free internet advertising for both companies thus they both win from a video like this. Apple do the same kind of thing maybe not to this maturity level but they once held a keynote and dogged at Microsofts CEO and design, look at the Apple vs PC advertisements they released, this then caused controversy online and created more public awareness of their brand and Microsofts Brand.

 

Bottom line companies like Apple and Microsoft need fanboys. Sad but true.

Well all I can say is this entire thread makes no sense, your first post specifically asked for reasons not to buy one, and completely valid reasons were brought up and you ignored them basically because Apple (you provided no counter argument, neither did anyone else really). You could have gotten better value by not buying Apple, you would have had better upgrade prospects, you could have chosen from any other operating system, you could have gotten a different ultrabook on ebay.

 

The only reason here is because it was an Apple product, the only reason. I mean, that's not necessarily your fault as Apple are so backwards as to refuse you to use their OS on anything but Apple hardware, but there you go.

 

Not to mention if you had come out and said "I want to test out Mac OSX at home so I'm thinking of buying a Macbook Pro" in your first post then I probably wouldn't have posted that.
