synaesthesia Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 I have always been a fan of Apple's hardware. You can't deny that their hardware is of a very high standard. I enjoy photo manipulation now that I am taking up photography as a hobby. I've played with some of the tools on the iMac at work and its great! Yes, you can. Form > function. So many design flaws, so many returns. For that reason, I'd have to say buy new if you really must.

abillybob Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 Very good video, don't know if people know about it but it's basically Ubuntu with the look and feel of Mac OS X. Apple predominantly uses Samsung Components in their Macs so don't be fooled, they don't have a better standard of components, it's basically a Samsung, we've had many go wrong here only after a year old 1 had logic board problems the other where HDD issues or keyboard issues. £300 odd isn't bad though what's the specs? i5? If so that's not a bad bargain.

That model actually has a Intel HD 3000 GPU, don't know why they are also claiming it has a HD 4000, it's the US version also so be careful I've heard that when people try to buy certain Mac Apps via a UK IP address they won't work. I still think £342 is a lot of money for a 4 year old computer and I personally wouldn't spend it. Hopefully you won't mind the above or experience any problems, I bought my Mac through Dave and got the school to buy it as I was using a MacBook Pro 13" 2012 which was a nightmare to work on so I needed something with a lot more OOMPH. I do love it (though a better GPU for the £2,400 price tag wouldn't of gone a miss) but it was a lot of money for what it was and I hate managing the things when it comes to a network environment, but each to their own.

It should be a great little machine the 2011 Air was in no way slow running Mac OS 10.7 and should take to 10.8, 10.9 and 10.10 fine as my 2012 did, only downside will be it does not have Bluetooth 4.0 so won't support continuity / handoff if you have an iPhone , apart from that so long as the Intel 3000HD graphics is good enough it will fly. I keep eyeing up the 2013/2014 Air the battery life is almost double what the 2011/2012 model is but i still get a good 5 hours out of this one 3 years and 300 cycles on.

I've always been against Apple stuff but since using the iMac for our iPad deployment it has been a pleasure using the iMac and OSX. Someone talk me out of this! I am going down the similar road, find myself wanting a MBP Ret after using our iMac in work with iPad deployment, nicer look and feel than windows (accepted arguments being costs and so on)
abillybob Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 Be careful if your planning on upgrading it with after market parts. Got the school to buy a Samsung SSD for a MacBook Pro 13"... It fitted but disk utility really didn't like it and would crash the system to a restart when trying to format it. This happened on all of the 20 MacBook's we have. Put it in a Windows machine and all was fine so wasn't the SSD.

Just wanted to point out this is codswallop - I've been using a US MBP for years and have never had any problems with the App store. Why would a laptop be limited to a certain region? The hardware (keyboard aside) is identical.
LosOjos Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 Just want to point out that logic board problems are not entirely Apple's fault. The EU ruled a few years ago that manufacturers must use lead-free solder. The problem with lead-free solder is that when exposed to extremes in temperature (like the GPU chip on a logic board), it cracks. This is what causes a failed logic board and can be fixed by a BGA reball (you can find people offering that service for around £100 on eBay). The same problem can happen in just about any piece of hardware made since RoHS came in 2003, but certain products seem to be affected more frequently, such as MacBooks and the PS3, probably due to insufficient cooling. TL;DR - the EU screwed our electronics (though it's probably for the greater good), but some manufacturers still aren't dealing with it well.
