tmcd35 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I currently run Hyper-V through Storage on a Win2k8R2 server accessed via SMB v2. I believe @localzuk does something similar. I've not had a problem over SMB, works fine, plenty fast enough. Upgrading to Win2k12 and SMB v3 over Easter. Will be doing some failover clustering then. Not tried a dedicated "Cluster in a box" solution though. I can't see it being logically any different to the two storage servers I'll have here. I suspect the communications/network bus between the "compute nodes" would be faster than my separate box solution.
localzuk Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I run a failover cluster of Win2k12 Hyper-V servers (2 of them at the moment), connecting to another 2k12 server over SMB3 for storage. Works great for us. Next generation of my setup will be a little more complex as I want to have redundant storage, using SoFS. So, not yet, but I will be as soon as our server refresh comes around. Not actually sure what you mean by "cluster in a box" as SoFS still requires more than one node...

I did a quick google before replying - Supermicro’s New Cluster-in-a-Box Solutions Running Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 - Windows Storage Server - Site Home - TechNet Blogs It looks like one chassis with 2 servers and some shared storage, so it'll have two nodes for SoFS.

My issue with it is - your cluster, is in a box. If something happens to that one box, something happens to your whole cluster? It seems to me to be putting all your storage eggs in one basket which is the opposite of what we are supposed to be doing nowadays isn't it?

Realistically you'd need more than one of them to be confident of having high availability. It does give you a lot more power in the same rack space though, great for stuff like VDI where affordable fast storage has been the problem until now. I do like the look of the Integrum, saw it at BETT and was rather impressed.
