Backup Exec server 2014 extremely slow in backing up

Hi

 

New to Edugeek so I'm not sure if I'm posting in the correct thread!

 

I have Backup Exec 2104 running on windows Server 2012 R2. I run daily incremental and full weekly backups of 2 virtual servers. its been working fine since last last week. the full backup should only take 1-2 days to complete with the backup rate around a few hundred MB per min. however now the backup has been running for several days and the backup rate is only 5MB per min ( you can manually copy files quicker than that!).

 

any ideas as to what could be causing it to go slow?

Looking forward, Junk Backup Exec, I'd suggest Veeam if you are using either VMWare or Hyper-V.

 

Backup Exec has been going down hill for years IMO.

 

Sorry couldn't be more help on your first post. We had BackupExec 2012 R2 I think and it was absolute pants, as soon as Veeam supported tape we completely junked BE.

 

If backing up to tape you could look at Firmware updates etc. for tape drives, I/O cards etc. If you have support with Symantec I'd also give them a ring to see if they can investigate the logs.

It's not particularly helpful but I agree, if you are already virtualised then you must try Veeam. It makes backup exec look like something from the eighties.

 

Get 5400mb/min backing up to bog standard commodity SATA drives using Veeam. It basically permanently maxes out the 1GB network card in my veeam backup server.

Plenty of people moaning online that BUE gets slow on some stuff, check it and all your agents are patched to the latest they did some patches that fixed that last year, I'm down to exchange taking forever but a reboot of the BUE box helps that.

Thanks for your recommendations. Our server was actually the problem so we simply moved the virtual backup server onto another server and its working fine. Old server is in process of being replaced

Have a scout round student home folders, I suspect someone has hundreds of empty folders.
