@Millgate quoted us £199.98 + VAT in April 2014. I can PM my contact at Millgate if required?

If you can wait until your anniversary payment is due to add the SQL licenses onto your EES agreement it will work out cheaper.

Mmm, I'd be interested in what exactly people are getting quotes on as there a several options to SQL Sever. Are these 2012 or 2014 quotes? Per User/Device or Per Core?

£75 sounds like per User/Device and would need CALs to go with it. £200 is about the ball park I was quoted (actually £230 for 2014 std) for Per Core.

Remember - per core is sold in units of 2 cores, and a minimum of 4 cores total (max 16 for standard - for 2014 edition) must be purchased. So the minimum total cost for the per core standard version will be in the ball park of £400 (2x£200, 2x2 Core packs).

It's also worth noting under EES that is a per year charge. I was quoted £450 for 2014 Std Core on a perpetual licence. Or £900 total for that server install. Turns out £900 now is cheaper than £400 per year since I don't plan on migrating that database until at least SQL 2019...

Thanks for the offer, we already have contacts at Millgate! :)

Pricing on SQL Server is insane... it'd cost more than half of all our other EES licensing combined!

IIRC, Microsoft changed the licensing again. SQL is licensed per core. But you need a minimum of 2x 1 core licenses.

SQL Server 2014 Licensing - SQL Server with Mr. Denny

I'm pretty sure it's 2x 2 core packs, min of 4 cores. There is also the choice between licencing based on on assigned VM cores or based on total cores available to the host (in a VM environment). This then impacts on whether or not a machine can be live migrated to another host depending on which of the two methods you use and whether or not all hosts are licensed. If you choose host based instead of VM based you could easily corner yourself into a position where all SQL servers can only be run on one particular host...

As always with MS licencing - it's a mine field.

You've obviously never licenced SQL before EES then if you think it's insane now! :)

Precisely why I've never gone for SCCM, nor persistant chat in Lync nor several other handy services. I can only justify this cost for SIMS.

I don't know about Lync, never looked into it, but the cost of using SQL standard for SCCM is included free of charge with the SCCM Management Licences. If you have the Core CAL suite licensed under EES then you have all the licenses you require to install SCCM and use it for client devices, you only need to purchase additional ML's if you want to manage your servers with SCCM.

Woah wait what? So if I'm licensed for SCCM and Enterprise CALs under EES... are you saying we have access to SQL Standard through this?

EDIT: I presume I'm not allowed to go and stick for example, SIMS or MBAM on this SQL Std install, it's exclusively for SCCM?

Correct. It's for SCCM only and nothing else.

... the SQL server licenses are included so no extra SQL licenses need to be purchased. One condition: only the databases of the System Center products may run on this SQL server. (Source)

Are there separate offerings without SQL Server Technology?

No. All System Center 2012 products include the right to run a runtime version of SQL Server Technology to support System Center so there are no longer separate offerings. (Source)

Q: License for one central SQL server instead of the runtime version?

A: The runtime edition is standard (not enterprise). A central SQL server enterprise would need to be separately licensed. (Source)

Something wrong here - i've just been quoted £1155.69 each on a renewal and says we need 4 of them!!!! The school paid over £4k for them last year before I started in this role!!

Any ideas where they would be used? I can only think of SCCM and SIMS and why 4 of them?

The SQL license is bundled with the SCCM license so you shouldn't need one for that

Holy Necro.

Well SIMS needs full SQL licence ideally if your a secondary school, and when getting the Core licence you have to have a minimum order of 4 (so you are covered for up to 8 vCPU or 8 pCPU). But the unit cost seems extremely high, should be around 1/4 of that price based on what we were quoted on OVS-EES the other year.

SCCM includes a licence for the full version of SQL as long as it's on the same host as the SCCM/MECM install itself, so does not need a dedicated SQL Core licence, unless you had a SQL instance on another server.

Depending who your current MS licence supplier is, might want to check with with other suppliers

That is for the Enterprise edition of SQL - do you need that, or should the Standard edition suffice?

These are the options under OVS-ES (some people call this EES but that's actually a different licence).

You can licence by server/cals or by core, there's a break point where Core is cheaper than server/cal combination depending on the number of users.

You then take into account whether it's on a physical or virtual server.

Price will depend on the agreement you have, if it's an OVS-ES we can get you a comparative price, just give me a shout
