Mark182 Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Our IT classes are using Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 (build 15.4.3538.0513) Students grab videos from the shared area and save them in their home area (all videos are .WMV format) upload the work and save. Next time they open the project they saved they are met with a little yellow triangle (see picture) like it cannot locate the file. Any ideas?
synaesthesia Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 I would be fairly sure from that, that they are moving the files after creating the project & dragging them in, assuming T: is your shared area.

synaesthesia Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Bum, out of ideas on that one then likely to do with the file location thing (where it can tell if files are from a network location/internet/local) but wouldn't know where to start on that! 1

Arreks Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Can you try it with the files stored locally to see if that works? if it does then it means that for whatever reason WMM can't find the networked files the second it opens - are your permissions set up on the document shares correctly? what happens if you close the project then re-open it, does it still have trouble finding the files? There is also this, while the error is not the same it could be worth looking into. 1

There is also this, while the error is not the same it could be worth looking into. Yeah, I'm guessing the permissions are set up right. As soon as you close it the videos disappear. It's always hit and miss what videos give the little triangle. Tried the Reg fix no joy :-/
CyberDrac Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 The older version of MovieMaker (2.6?) always saved the project information to the local profile which didn't get copied back to the server, unless they sat at the same machine they 'lost' their files and had to re-associate them. As this is a piece of software designed for home use I was told Microsoft were unlikely to change that behaviour.

robjduk Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 I have outed Movie Maker from my school now as it was getting on a little bit and not as well supported as it once was. I promote the use of Serif products as it does not cost a fortune for a site licence and there is a free basic, home use version for students to carry on with outside of school. 1

I need to see what we can use from that

So, until the project is completed and a WMV file is created the project and the video clips must both exist in the same place that they were when the project was created.

Yes, your right as the file size is only around 5/6kbs but when the try to export the finished project it cannot see/find the file even though its in the same folder. We even installed the newest version of movie maker but still the same outcome. I forgot we have Serif MoviePlus X3! So I will point the ICT teacher towards that.

ninjaguardsheep Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 (edited) We had to create the key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live\Movie Maker\AllowNetworkFiles as a DWORD with a value of 1 in our user profiles to get around this issue. Oaktech Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 We're using Serif Movie Plus X6. seems good, kids are not having difficulties with it, it's pretty cheap and seems stable. It even works acceptably on our remaining 10 multipoint terminals.
ADMaster Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 I'm late here but when our arts department had issues with movie maker, it was an offline files issue. I had offline files disabled by GPO for the entire school. Movie maker wanted offline files to be enabled. I don't recall now if this was WMM2011 or '12. This was back in Feb 2012 and they don't use it any more. Cheers
