As some of you may know - I've had another spell in hospital recently - and this was Northampton General calling with an automated customer service survey! The only question was "Would you recommend the ward you stayed on to family and friends?" Maybe its just me, but that seems wrong on so many levels - I mean they could've just asked if I was happy with the care I received - but would I recommend it! - well better than a week at Butlins I suppose - but on the whole I'd rather my family and friends didn't need to go there at all...

witch Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 The word "recommend" is certainly an odd choice and smacks of a cheap survey with standard questions that could not be changed!

No-one chooses which hospital they go to anyway; if I need a hospital, I'm damn well driving to the one that's closest to me, not the one that a friend recommended because ooh, they just had a lovely time when they took their appendix out at Nottingham. The meals were ever so nice, and the nursing staff were just lovely, you know, really lovely.

Pyroman Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Yeah, when i got dragged into hospital there was no way i was going to the next city, i'm dying and my local is 2 miles away. Not that i knew much about it, i was on that many drugs from the word go i was out of it most of the time!
witch Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 The thing is, if you are going for a routine op, then you can choose where you go, up to a point. So there is some merit in having feedback on the sort of experience people have in different hospitals. I suspect it is too expensive in terms of manpower to sort out who chose their hospital and who didn't, so everyone gets sent the survey.

The meals were ever so nice, and the nursing staff were just lovely, you know, really lovely. I have a chronic ear condition. I've been treated in two hospitals for it, one was my local one and the current one is the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital in London run by UCLH. The care in my local hospital was OK but got progressively worse as time went on. In the end, they seemed to forget about me, I didn't get any further appointments or a discharge letter. When my condition got to the point where it needed treating again, I got referred to UCLH and the care that I've got from them was an order of magnitude better. In an emergency, I'll go to my local but for continuing care for my ears, I'm going to UCLH.
bossman Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Pretty lucky really, never been in Hospital since I was 14 years old and that was for 2 broken legs, my mother on the other hand has been into hospital on numerous occasions and to be honest she was treated atrociously, I will not name the hospital as the whole trust has been under close scrutiny by the medical equivalent of Ofsted, I did fill out a complaints form and received an apology from the Trust but it seems they are still having trouble managing the hospitals under their care. Private healthcare seems 100% better in its NHS form me feels and these PM forms are just that, intrusive and not a fair indication of some of the hospitals who do care. 1

That said the care was only ok even in the resus ward where I spent hours on my own. Finally moved to another ward and left again. Out of 8 hours in there I had to ask for a cup of tea at the 7 hour mark as was very dehydrated. Glad to be home now and resting up today. Am not sure how I could accurately fill a 'recommend' form. This was the hospital local to me but think given a choice I would opt for the better one in town.

Mind you the gas and air in the ambulance was pretty groovy!! I am fine today though very tired, so an having a rest day and back to work tomorrow. 4

Mind you the gas and air in the ambulance was pretty groovy!! I am fine today though very tired, so an having a rest day and back to work tomorrow. I remember my partner-at-the-time fell down the stairs and did her back in.. She got taken to hospital and was on gas and air. It was hilarious. She kept dozing in and out, so me and my friend who were there with her kept switching chairs to confuse her 1

I'm due in for a Hernia operation in a few weeks time. It's beginning to worry me now.

When we were in with my wife giving birth to our son, I was sitting close to her and ended up getting rather high on the 'spare' gas and air that she was breathing out! But then again, as I'd clocked up getting on for 40 hours awake that 'day', it didn't take much lol
featured_spectre Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 In regards to the "would you recommend us again" I spoke with the PALS service in my local hospital and they said it is because that you can now pick your surgeon and where you go.
