mikkydoos Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Hi all, Got fibres nylon cable tied to catenaries. Every 3-4 years I have to get someone in to reattach the cable after the ties break - heat and frost I suspect. Its that time again! Was looking at using steel ties to secure them. What do you think is the best thing to use? Any products you know of? Cheers in advance
Chris_ Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 We have the same problem, and we have a lot of fibres! I was looking at UV resistant cable ties as I think the UV from the sun causes the plastic to degrade. Not sure if it's just a marketing con though..
Oaktech Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 How far does it go? I've used uv stabilised flexible tube, run the catenary through the tube and run the fibre through too. I've made sure the fibre has an abrasion resistant jacket though. The limitation is that it's hard to get the tube in more than 20m lengths although you can get couplers.
mikkydoos Posted January 29, 2015 Author Posted January 29, 2015 (edited) Its about 30m. Its already installed and don't want the hassle of taking it down. Cable is hanging very low. Don't want the wind to whip it and break it. And I've got 6 of 'em Edited January 29, 2015 by mikkydoos

Try someone like electric centre or rexel-senate for specific UV stable ties. RS do them but they will charge an arm and both legs for the privilege.
mikkydoos Posted January 29, 2015 Author Posted January 29, 2015 I'm thinking steel. No way that can damage if its tightened just right I don't think
Oaktech Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 I'd be concerned about steel ones chewing their way through the jacket on the fibre...

Michael Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 You can get large/thick cable ties which are approx. 30cm long, but you can of course cut them down. This should resist more than smaller ones.
Oaktech Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Also, the tensioning tool for steel ties costs a fortune!
PotNoodleTech Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Cable ties have a finite lifetime before they go brittle and eventually snap, particularly if they are subject to temperature variations (e.g direct sunlight one minute, cold/snow the next). If you want a reliable method of fixation you are really going to have to look at something more metallic.
commstuff71 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I would use metal cable ties. There is also a nylon tie that has traces of metal in them and these are used in factories that produce food (show up on X ray). I would not worry about friction from the ties causing an issue.
mikkydoos Posted February 26, 2015 Author Posted February 26, 2015 Cheers, done it now. Nylon tied with a loose-ish steel tie aswell. Hopefully won't have to do it again.
