robjduk Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Looking for new staff laptops and want to make sure I get the perfect solution but have hit the normal minefield of different specs for different vendors so want to ask the community... what would you choose... 5th gen Intel i5 with a 7200rpm hard drive or... 4th gen Intel i5 with a hybrid hard drive Opinions please ladies and gentlemen! (please no approaches from vendors offering to chat to me about specs. I have my vendors in mind thank you)
featured_spectre Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Can you get 4th Gen with SSD at all? We went 4th Gen i5 and swapped out HDDs for SSDs, and its made a massive performance change.
gaz350b Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 I would go Ssd or hybrid any day for 1 gen difference. Have a look at some cpu benchmark tables. Compare what cpu you have now in staff laptops to the 4th/5th gens you are speccing. Will they notice the difference? Now compare hard drive performance on your old kit to the hard drive performance of the std hdd and hybrid hdd in the new kit. Will they really see benefit from. New standard hard drive compared to the hybrid where they see a massive gain.
synaesthesia Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 SSD all the way IMO; not so much a performance thing, but laptops can be knocked around a bit and you could therefore be helping with data integrity going with something non-mechanical.

3s-gtech Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 I'd buy whichever is better price/performance, and stick SSDs in myself. If you can customise the spec, perhaps choose smaller HDDs.

SHimmer45 Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 SSD is going to give the most performance boost, for pretty much everything in school the average computer has more processing power than needed. people want stuff to load quickly etc and an SSD is the best way to achieve that if the application is on the local machine. and they should be getting cheap enough where a 120GB is viable for most prices ranges. for the record we have kingston V300 in one suite as our 1st area to get them and have been VERY pleased with the performance so far.
