Hi all,

Fun week this one! Todays issue of choice is problems trying to log on, which seems to be affecting everyone.

People are able to get to the "Welcome" screen, but this is where it hangs. I've managed to log in locally and then remote in to the DC which took about 20mins to connect to but otherwise seems okay.

I'm able to ping everything and its mum.

Any ideas for what to look for would be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers,

J

I believe it's a group policy processing issue. I had the same problem this week and narrowed it down to folder redirection.

I would suggest running a gpresult from within the gp management console for a user and PC you know are experiencing issues, in order to pinpoint the issue. If you haven't done that already, that is!

If it isn't already turned on, it is always worth turning on the 'highly detailed status messages' option at Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System. It'll show you easily if one aspect of group policy is taking an eternity to process!

If you have Server 2008 R2 or below its called 'Verbose vs normal status messages'. Caught me out when first playing around with server 2012.

Not if you have downloaded the updated ADMX files from Microsoft and added them to your central store (which you should do if you have a mix of 2008 R2-2012 R2 servers and/or Windows 7-8.1 clients).

It definitely sounds like a issue with Group Policy Objects - also it's worth looking at any logon scripts, I have had similar issues for example when you have logon scripts set to run async, it will hang until the logon scripts have completely run. As mentioned enable verbose output on the messages.
