abillybob Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 What's up peeps!? Just a quick question really because I seriously can't get my head around it. The girlfriend is having some issues with her laptop, when you turn it on the screen is just black, no BIOS no nothing although the WiFi light and Power On light are all on and I can hear the fans. Its a decent computer only around 3 years old and is in perfect condition. I have tried replacing the HDD, replacing the RAM, I have pulled out the BIOS battery and put a new one in. I have tried all the little fixes like seeing if pressing the fn key and F4 button would switch the screen back. I have tried plugging it in to an external monitor and still nothing outputs to the screen? It's really strange one day it was working the next it was just black. DOn't really know what else I can try? Hoping you guys can shed some light, it's a HP Pavilion DV6, it doesn't beep or make any noises when starting up, the only thing it does do is blink the Caps Lock Light and Num Lock Light continuously in sync with one another. What do ou reckon? Thanks
Norphy Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 If you've replaced the RAM and tried an external monitor, it's going to be either a duff motherboard or a duff CPU (possibly both if one is soldered to the other). If the status LEDs are blinking, that does suggest an error condition of some kind but you'd need to find some technical documentation to see what exactly it means or contact HP. The answer may just be, get a new one. 1
abillybob Posted January 20, 2015 Author Posted January 20, 2015 This is the exact laptop.... Trusted Reviews
Grey-gear Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 With the blink lights it sound like an error code to me. Check the blinking against the table above 1
Oaktech Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 It's either a CPU or Mobo failure, or a bad bios. We have some HP DM1 that die doing that. It's not likely to be a fixable fault. Computer does not start and the LEDs blink or the computer beeps | HP® Support 1

Not a scratch on the thing!!! She can't afford a new one so I thought I could fix it :/ With the blink lights it sound like an error code to me. Check the blinking against the table above Thank you seems like it's a pretty big fault a new one maybe in order then. It's such a pretty looking thing as well! Edited January 20, 2015 by abillybob

Cheers but I think if it's the motherboard it may get a bit messy and the problem being you can't guarantee it'll look the same when it's been tampered with on such a huge scale.
difinity Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 The graphics BGA is known to be faulty on these. Sometimes repaired with a reball but usually the chip has to be replaced.
3s-gtech Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 As above, this model/generation of AMD powered HP is quite well known for de-soldering itself when it gets hot, with these sort of results. It's a shame. The oven trick with the mainboard may work.

Why not? Unless you open it with a hammer, you shouldn't be able to tell from the outside that it's ever been opened up.

Hmmm spose I could try!!! Just a lot of work then, to get the motherboard out I'd have to disconnect it from all the peripherals such as screen etc... and sometimes they have small wires that can easily break etc... would be a bit of a nightmare in my head so I've never bothered attempting it.
3s-gtech Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 First time you do it is nerve-racking. Go carefully, don't yank at anything (though some case clips can be awkward) and work round all of the clips and cables. Label up and store the screws so you can easily re-assemble it. Having had to take apart near new laptops just to upgrade the RAM or HDD due to poor design, I know it's not too tricky with patience. If you do pop it in the oven, remember to follow any guides carefully - any meltable parts off etc. How to Reflow a Laptop Motherboard in a Household Oven, Repair Guide
ITBadger Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Of course, you could just get a new girlfriend, one with a working laptop... 2
Oaktech Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 I did a fan in a friends DV6 not a month ago and it requires a total t'bitsing, and other than one tiny mark in the plastic to remove the first corner of the keyboard I did it without any difficulty. There was even a video of someone doing it on youtube...
Joanne Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Take the HDD out and sell it as faulty. Use money to put towards new laptop... maybe second hand? Chromebooks are sub £200 now anyways.... awww yiiisssss.
difinity Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 There are people out there that repair laptops professionally, decent ones will have all the necessary kit like a BGA rework station. Whilst the oven trick can work usually only for a short while, it still doesn't replace the lead free balls or the possibly as is quite common the chip. That guide above also misses out the most important part of the reflow and that is adding flux. That stuff you do not want in an oven you cook food in !! In short find a professional and it will cost less than £80 even if they have to replace the chip.
hallb15 Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Have you tried a new/different power supply? As odd as it sounds, I had an HP laptop (Not sure if it was a DV6 variant) at a previous school with similar symptoms (no POST, no beeps, just flashing LEDs) and it turned out to be the PSU had failed and wasn't giving the correct voltage out. Maybe you could borrow one just to rule it out? Or worth a tenner to get a new one off ebay? Could always re-ebay it if not the solution...
abillybob Posted January 20, 2015 Author Posted January 20, 2015 (edited) Thank you everyone. I think she's just going to start looking for a new one. I'll let her know we can sell off the parts to get her some money back I have tried the PSU thing I have another one in school that's the same voltage etc... and it hasn't fixed the problem I think spending an addition £80 is a lot of money for a 3-4 year old laptop and nothing saying that something else won't go once she's dished out for £80 worth of fixes. Thank you for all you help though!!! Of course, you could just get a new girlfriend, one with a working laptop... Are you offering.... Edited January 20, 2015 by abillybob
