Fibre Optic (Installation & Testing) Courses

Hi there,

 

we have got quite a bit of fibre work to do over the next few years and have recently had a few quotes which were very much on the expensive side of things.

 

So the powers have asked me to investigate the possibility of this being done in house. ie: they buy all the kit and send me on courses.

 

Has anyone been on such a course and could they recommend it?

I did a course a couple of years back, it may have changed since I did but it wasn't too difficult, just a lot of patience needed when your 1st begin polishing. You will need a kit with a microscope tho and the lapping paper does cost a little. It is useful and I have done a few installs very cheaply but most fibre optic installers don't polish anymore they buy pig tails and splice using a splice machine.. But they cost lots of pennies!

You could always do what I have done which is buy pre-terminated fibre and pull that through, no messing or fuss you just measure, buy and then buy a patch panel and clip it in, we did 3 or 4 runs of that no issues and when I had a firm in for a really complex run we had them test it all and everything was all good and fine no issues so it worked well Certainly a lot cheaper than buying the correct tools as the correct optical test meter will be a LOT of money to buy as are fusion splicers (much easier to splice than faff with making your own plugs now a days).

its not the course thats expensive its all the kit that is needed for splicing the cables, terminating and testing to make sure they meet the certified type.

The previous IT guy gave me a run-through on terminating fibre (ST connectors) during our handover period. We've got one of these kits Buy Fibre Optic Kits AMP LightCrimp+ ST/SC/LC termination kit TE Connectivity 1278118-4 online from RS for next day delivery. . It's quite straightforward once you've done a couple.

 

Although for replacement fibres we're probably going to go down the route of buying pre-terminated fibre of the correct length or using Ubiquiti AirMax links.
