It's part of a fire alarm system; the cabling is labeled PYROTENAX.

Nope - Pyrotenax is a brand name for mineral insulated copper cored (MICC) cable. True, it was often used in fire alarm and other safety systems, but not exclusively. Self supporting, easy to install and paint, and very robust.

It's surprising how many people can't resist turning off a button that says "DO NOT SWITCH OFF"... So much so, we are tempted to hook up the switch to a buzzer or something so that when they do turn it off, we get some enjoyment out of their faces!

Hook it up to a camera, too, so it takes a photo of their face, preferably one that can quickly snap a photo every half a second or less.. Begin a wall of shame and include the most shocked/embarrassing frames you get.

I'd go with old sessional bell / 240v fire alam system idea having had similar looking stuff in ours. check its dead not alive before chopping out

I think it was Douglas Adams that posited that the paint wouldn't have time to dry on the sign saying; "End of the world button - do not touch"

It's worth noting this button is in a main corridor and within reach of children, there is no way I'm the first to press it!

Front plate had a button on it, so I pushed it.

Found out there used to be a disabled toilet which was converted into a cupboard next to it. Probably some kind of panic alarm(is that what they're called?) I'd imagine. Edited January 8, 2015 by tommej
