Speakers - supplier / brand recommendation request

I'm looking for a pair of 50W speakers to replace the antique (and now broken) pair in the school hall. Anyone got a recommendation for make and supplier please?

50W for a school hall of any size is drastically under rated. I'd have thought you'd need 250-300+ with a suitable amp. Look at JBL, EV or Turbosound for proper makes; Studiospares "own brand" or some Behringer (love or hate make) for cheapies.

 

I'd guess they were broken by being turned up to 11 for a disco?

Pretty standard Primary School sized; I think the function max is 150 people.

here at school we use a pair of Soundlab 15" 300WRMS Speakers G591E for our sports hall (whole school assemblies)

they would do for your hall, you can get good output with any amplifier with at least 300 Watts output.

 

 

we use a more complex setup for our main hall including four Bose ceiling mounted Click Here and a pair of sub cabinets for bass, all these powered with two 800 watts amplifiers and one 1600 watts amplifier.

I suppose you mean "hung".

 

Bose will also bring out the rabid fans and detractors. Not the best speakers in the world, but workman like and easy to use IMHO. However they are not cheap, and you can get better sounding boxes for less, if you sacrifice the portability.

if you turn your head upside down you will see them standing on the ceiling... ,, well anyway, yes, bose systems are not cheap but they were there when I came to work to this school, they sound really good, but of course, for Speckytecky needs a budget system so those from soundlab would be ok

Crumbs - if your budget runs to ripoff underperforming Bose stuff then you could a probably afford to get a real PA system in there, I reccomend HK Audio - fantastic qualty.

Wattage is irrelevent, and only an indication of the maximum signal input (which, depending on the manufactrurer may be a short burst or continuous).

 

If you want actual volume you need to be looking for a more efficient pair of speakers (or more than one set). 87-88db is average. Anything over 90 is noticably louder.

 

Wattage of the amp is also largely irrelevent as long as you have something rated at 20W RMS upwards (for a small hall).

 

If you have a small hall and cost is an issue, I would look at 2 pairs of JBL Control 1 speakers attached to a suitable amplifier. If 2 pairs are insufficient, get an amp with pre-out and add a cheap power amplifier and another 2 pairs on this.

 

If you have a large hall, then frankly you need a PA type speaker with 12-15" drivers to shift enough air. Jamo make various models of this type.

Bose stuff is over-rated. Fine there CD players may be okai, but the rest of its very over-rated really.

I would recommend Bose audio gear, its a bit more expensive but the results are much better.
