Your Steam Game of the Year?

Hi folks,

 

It's a time of year when I have to spend 3 weeks abroad with my in-laws.

 

They spend a lot of time with the kids though, so it's my one chance in the year to play computer games. So I have 3 weeks to play one or more Steam games (on my rather old gaming laptop, so it might not be up to super duper demanding shtuff). (Steam because it's easy, but if it's easily available via digital download elsewhere then I can try and get it.)

 

What's your recommendation for the best game this year on Steam based on the limits above?

 

I like RPG, FPS, retro stuff. Less so beat 'em ups, puzzles, and arcade things, but probably still worth mentioning.

Rogue legacy for mega cheap, quite hard, mario style fun!

 

Apart from that middle earth shadow of mordor was pretty damn good!

 

Probably not entirely fitting to your genres though. (rogue legacy is in a retro style though i suppose)

I’ve enjoyed faster than light and Game Dev Tycoon this year, just bought Football Manager 2015 so good bye free time after my exam in Jan!

I went for Shadowrun: Dragonfall, but was a little bored by it.

 

Have switched to Alien: Isolation as I'm a huge fan of the film series. I've heard it's slow, so have been prewarned at least.

I'll second Rogue Legacy, really fun game, occasionally brutal, and to top it all of, extremely addicting. While I'm at it, I'll second FTL too. Time seems to fly when playing that, even if I can't kill cruiser stage two (I'm not mad, I swear)

 

I was going to mention Shadowrun, I took that to the states with me for the Hotel and that was good fun, but seeing as you already tried, that's out.

What was it that threw you off? The pace? Setting?

 

Might be worth looking at Divinity: Original Sin, not cheap, but really good fun, made the recommendation to a few guys in the office and they're all enjoying it.

Origin are currently giving away Sim City 2000 for free, if you're into those / not completely against letting Origin live on your laptop, might be worth looking into.

Whilst it's not exactly new I have been loving playing the X-Com Reboot. Fantastic game and plenty of nostalgia for those of us who remember the original

Love FTL. Played it quite a bit last Christmas.

 

Not sure what it was about Shadowrun. A bit slow paced perhaps. I played the RPG back when it was launched and loved it.

 

I suspect I'll only have time for Alien: Isolation now, but will see.

Have you tried Rust? It's awesome and soso addictive. They released a major update to it a while back now and I do have to say I love it, haven't played it for a while though as I have got Far Cry 4 (just completed and it's flamin awesome) Assassins Creed Unity and Call of Duty to play through yet.

 

I do have to say I'm very disappointed with the graphics on the latest COD, Far Cry 4 is out of this world but COD.... meh.

My recommendation:

 

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.

 

Plus, if you like simulators -

Euro Truck Simulator 2.

Farming Simulator 15.

Right now I'd just say have a browse through the Humble Bundle Sale https://www.humblebundle.com/store/ and see what's dirt cheap - as good as, if not better than the Steam sale (which isn't on yet anyway). You get a Steam Key for everything, or you can often download a DRM-free installer to avoid issues with patchy internet.

 

One of my techs was making a lot of happy noises about Divinity: Original Sin earlier this year. Witcher 2 is cheap on gog.com right now and well worth a play, although a bit risky if the kids might wander in - it definitely earns its reputation as a mature title*

 

EDIT: same technician just said Grim Dawn was possibly his favourite game of the year though, even over Divinity. It's an ARPG by the bods wot done Titan Quest back in the day, and is £11 something on Humble

 

*in the context of videogames, which basically means lots of ladies funbags on display, although the story and plot are actually mature and grim and well developed. None of that comes across when someone walks in the room and glances over your shoulder, though...

That's Batman Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and Arkham Origins, plus Origins DLC (Season Pass and some other DLC).

Definitely Stick of Truth for me. The game had me in stitches and was so horribly inappropriate but genius.
