Has anyone put an iPad in reception for visitor use?

 

Wondered how you secured it and charged it etc.

 

Was thinking it would be locked to Safari for web browsing only.

I've not done it but I can think of a couple of easy to do security measures to lock it down.

 

First turn restrictions on and set safari to only open the website you require.

Then disable all other apps, App Store, installing, removing apps etc.

Turn guided access mode on and set a code. This will allow you to lock the iPad into a single app and triple pressing the home screen turns it on and off with a passcode. You can also disable parts of the screen.

 

I think you can enable single app mode via the iPad restrictions but you might need to do that via apple Configurator.

 

I think that's everything, I was just interrupted and I've lost my train of thought...

I'd be more concerned about it ending up in someones bag - you'll need to look at a physical method of securing it.

I'm about to do something similar - I've got a tablet with a dodgy USB port which makes it no use as a teaching machine. I'm going to use it as a papercut release station in place of the mahoosive desktop p3 pc with a 500w PSU that is currently doing the job.

Single App Mode can be achieved the same was as doing guided access on the device. Go to settings, accessibility and guided access. Pop in a passcode and triple click the home button when in the app you want, and then click Start.

Facebook HQ in London has ipads mounted on the Reception desk. You sign in as a visitor on them and then they print your badge from the information given.

I've been looking at locking down the iPad to our website using the "guided access" and have hit upon a few problems.

 

1. I've drawn around the area at the top of the screen to prevent access to the buttons and some of the navigation at the top of our website which links off to other sites.... BUT..you can just zoom in and then access those links. Can zooming be disabled on an iPad?

 

2. If I click a link it can take me off the school website - or in some cases opens up a flyer with no navigation I can probably get the website changed to prevent this but is there any way to lock the iPad/Safari to ONLY one URL ? Or would I have to do this on my smoothwall - but then that would give a block page - which they could probably not navigate off!!!

Under General -> Restrictions....Allowed Content.

 

You can choose "Specific Websites Only"

 

I've removed the other pre-populated sites and just added in our site.

Only by changing the website i would assume. You could not mask out the forward / back buttons as i don't see those as being an issue.

The solution was DOH!

 

Just only mask out the area to the right of the left/right navigate buttons !

These schools are using FileMaker database, they have an Education Volume Site licence and have switched most of their MIS systems over to using this, FileMaker Go is the app they are using on the iPad and have created a database for visitors to then sign in and out.
