jmair Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 A few years ago I was at a tech conference and several companies were pitching their product that would allow teachers to prerecord web videos to a server on site for later viewing. Allowing for after hours recording and then intranet playback video speeds for all the kids and teachers, seemingly making everyone happy and solving all of our problems. Ha! Has anyone used one of these or recommend one for me to look at? Much appreciated.
robjduk Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 I looked into a system called clickview a few years back. it was not for me in the end but it sounds like it will do what you want it to do. A lot of people on here seem to use it too.

ass17 Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 Planet eStream, it's expensive to buy outright but for what it does its a no brainer!! We had a demo a few days, unbelievable what it can do!! To buy outright with the freeview module and if you specked a decent server you are talking for education around £15,000. £799+vat each year for support and updates. Just got to find 15k!!

gshaw Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Another vote for eStream, does video storage, TV recording, live streaming and digital signage. Also the best product support I've seen from any company, always helpful and quick to find solutions and respond to feature requests.

The main reason we changed was because estream seemed to give more value for money. You also don't need to install a client on a pc to run it. I know the cloud version may have changed this. We purchased estream outright with freeview. The signage is great especially integration of your content into signage. Sales and support are very good and Andrew, sales director is very passionate about the product and always like to hear ideas of how to improve the product.

What about a HTPC or DVR to record the TV programmes and then upload them to Google Drive since schools now have unlimited storage? It won't be as sophisticated as Planet eStream, but it would be more than 15x cheaper.

zag Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Cool, just been playing around with the flowplayer component and it seems to play mp4 files hosted fine. It should be easy enough to write my own frontend for this in a few hours. I'll opensource it on github when its complete. Saves another £5k

I wrote a small PHP page that browses directories and filenames, playing the resulting video in the opensource flowplayer web object. It works quite well for our needs and could be extended to include metadata from textfiles/xml. Just plonk any videos into the /video folder and the website will scrape it and play over the web! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Amg6a74LS9Q Hopefully saved us some money! zag Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 I tested Skydrive video streaming yesterday and it works only about 50% of the time. Other times it crashed chrome. Not reliable from my tests. Also I wanted a solution that didn't need signing in again.
zag Posted December 10, 2014 Posted December 10, 2014 Been working a bit on this custom video player today and got a few things running. - Video uploads and encoding (using handbrake) - Video streaming (using flowplayer) - Directory browsing of exisiting videos. I'm not sure whether to develop this into a full blown system with a database and such but will see how it goes. It already fits out needs for streaming internally via the web.
