t_guest Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 Well I got it in today to find a cup off coffee spilled over the server I remotely shut the server down then got a cloth and wiped it up. After 2 hours later I turned it back on To find a weird noise witch I have never heard before I informed the caretaker about the mess and for health and safety reasons. But I don’t want to start taking the server apart as I don’t have a clue about them that well. Could it be damaged?

Guess it was knocked over by someone? lol It could very well be damaged if it has made contact with internal parts of the system.. have you taken the cover off to see if there is any liquid in the actual case? Joedetic Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 Yeah, if it's making a weird noise it's either becuase there's coffee goo stuck in something like bizzel said or because it's shorted a controller for something because it was still damp inside when you turned it on and whatever that controller controlled is now acting erratically causeing the noise.

You should always immediately disconnect from power, then strip down the machine and make sure all liquids are cleaned up. Components that did get wet should be left to dry for at least 24hrs before reassembling and powering up.

Take the cover off see if there is coffee anywhere, and clean it if there is wait till monday before switching it on! If the machine booted before, at least the electronics aren't fried!

If you don't feel confident get somebody else to have a go - I love ripping apart servers... the hardware is soooo pretty I would go a little beyond the 24hrs - clean it up as best you can and leave somewhere warm and dry for a week or so if possible. We have a coffee machine in our server room! Takes a real ID-10T to put any drink on top of a server so we're safe... for now...

tech_guy Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 We once had an engineer from the LEA tip a cup of coffee over the server he was just about to install.....it only splashed down the side so he was ok. We still have the stain on the server room carpet to prove it.

I would be itchin to take apart a server the insides are soo pretty.. Just take the cover off and see if theres any coffee in there.. and clean it and leave to dry.. if you unplug anything or disconnect anything remeber where it goes and how u disconnected it.. you should be fine. Just dont spill coffee over it when its open then it would be F@@£$% Regards james
TechMonkey Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 Keep digi camera close by and photo everything from every angle to have a record of it. Everytime a new bit is revealed take more photos. That way you'll have a visual record to compare if you get stuck.

enjay Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 Odd noises are almost certainly coming from the fan - the tiniest amount of dust on them can cause them to spin badly and therefore make a noise. @TechMonkey - very good advice re. the photos, that way you know how to put it back together again. I now always draw diagrams of mainboard jumpers, after learning the hard way and having to crack a second computer open to compare! @Tech_Guy - did the LEA engineer finish the work? If it had been me, him spilling coffee at the very start would have been the point at which we was escorted off the premises...

But seriously serves you or one of your half-wit colleagues right for drinking by the servers. I once ate a packet of those mini jaffa cakes while I was working behind the server racks in my previous job. But a few crumbs is very different to a warm drink.

IS that not a fundemental part of being an ICT Tech ? Just what I was thinking, one of the perks of the job isn't it? Anyway, whats the basic difference between a PC and a server...not a great deal. Get the screwdriver out quick before someone else beats you to it and has the fun. Oh and yes, turn the power off, look inside first before even thinking of powering back on. If it wasn't your cup of coffee, enjoy the panic of people running around like headless chickens because they can't get to their files etc. while you have fun taking it apart and slowly drying it out :-)
