JATSO Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Dear architect of my local Norman castle, Please can I have your permission to publish this nice photo I have taken on Facebook. I know it has been several hundred years since your last public sighting but I hope this request finds you well. Kind regards, Amateur photographer. Looks like you don't need permission. https://www.change.org/p/european-parliament-save-the-freedom-of-photography-savefop-europarl-en?recruiter=100085230&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink 1
Dos_Box Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 On our trip to ISTE last week they had tall ships in the harbour just down from the hotel. Very impressive and this is a genuine 19th century French vessel

A bit worried about ownership, etc. so just researching heavily before I do - I don't expect to make any money out of my pictures but then I don't want anybody else to either!

You can set your own copyright on images but it's up to you to police it. I used to do a check every week or so on my most popular images using Google Image Search and Tineye. Did find a guy using one of mine once, charged him £20 to licence it for use in his blog (he was using it in a WP template, so was earning money from it). Have had others simply add a credit or me. Ultimately, once you put something online, you've got to accept if someone wants it, they'll likely steal it and it'll be very difficult to do anything about it. If I were a professional photographer, I wouldn't put anything online. As an amateur, so be it; it's not actually doing me any harm if someone wants to pretend they took my photos.

You could always put a watermark over the top of the image to stop people using it. Lightroom will allow you do this when you export it.

Yeah you could, but then the photo looks carp anyway (in my opinion of course!) so why bother? To each their own, but I'm not trying to earn a living off my photos anyway that said, if I found someone was using them to make a fortune (i.e. selling prints), then I'd pursue it further as breach of copyright.

LosOjos Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 ^^ Funny i'd never thought of someone selling prints of someone else's photo without asking #iamnaive There have been some pretty bad breaches over the years. I am involved (not so much any more, but at one time) with a group called the Icebox on flickr. It's a really tough critique group, but some of the togs there are incredible. Anyway, there was a long running thread where members would post up breaches they'd been subject to or if they spotted another members' photo in the wild. There were all sorts of breaches, from major blogs (1mil+ subscribers) stealing shots, to TV advertising campaigns, all the way up to a Polish supermarket using someone's family photo to decorate their entire outside window! Most of them got resolved in the end, but the moral really is that if you put a photo online, you have to accept it may get stolen, then you have to weigh up whether it's worth pursuing it or just moving on. Obviously in the cases with big firms, it's usually fairly easy to get them to pay up, but when it's some small blog who pleads naivety (or even gets downright hostile towards you) when you contact them, it's not really worth the expense to chase them for what will amount to a few $$$ payout in my opinion... Here's the thread if you're interested [WARNING: contains some NSFW content/language]: https://www.flickr.com/groups/theicebox/discuss/72157628114209623/
