So for a good while now, maybe a year? we have been with Sky fibre optic. It doesn't seem up to much to be honest.

Just done a speed test and it's come out as 6.27Mbps - download and similar upload. But that isn't unusual, it sometimes gets up to 9 ish but it's not usual.

I know the fibre only goes to the 'cabinet' nearest us etc. but still, can't I expect something a little faster than this? I almost wonder if it's worth paying for fibre at all, maybe standard broadband would be the same (can't remember what we were getting speedwise on that).

Would changing providers have any impact?

Nah, that's shockingly low for fibre and pretty average for broadband even. I would have thought you'd be within your rights to cancel given the advertised speeds would surely have been about 38mb for Sky's lower tier fibre package. I went for the former Sky fibre package and I usually get around 33 Mbps. And my broadband was truly appalling previously at only around 1 Mbps before moving to fibre.

What is your actual sync speed?

If you look at your router maintenance page (usually http://192.168.0.1/sky_router_status.html then login with your sky routers username and password) it should list your sync speed as downstream and upstream connection speeds.

Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps):8349

Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps):25457

That is a copy and paste. I should add my machine is wireless connected. I will dig out a long cable tomorrow and do another speed test with through the wire but... I just did another a moment ago and it was 2.73Mbps... :-/

Yes we have the 'up-to' 38Mbps package but we do live in a small town so I don't expect to reach that. However...!!!

I get a speed of 40Mb on the router, but on a speed test it ranges from 25Mb to 35Mb depending on what day you run it. Some times it falls to 10Mb of below at peak times. But still much better than ADSL.

Just email or phone Sky and ask them to look at it or retrain the line which take about 10 days and they are happy to do it , I've got 80mb sky fibre pro and was stuck at 40mb connection as exchange trained my line on the normal fibre package . Now get speed test up to 76mb and very low ping (10-15ms) on games

I've been with Sky Fibre for about a year. Started out at 38mbps for about 4 months then dropped to 25mbps but seems to run at more like 8mbps (upload speed unchanged). Had an engineer out who messed around with a few things and got it sorted. A couple of weeks later it dropped. Got them out again and another engineer spent quite a long time back and forth to the cabinet and got it back up to 38mbps. Now after about another 3 months it's dropped again. Surely if it work's fine for months on end and then stops it can't be something to do with the distance I am from the cabinet as I would have expected it to slow down after about a week? I'm sick of ringing them now.

I recently upgraded to Sky fibre and I get on average 35-40 Mbps. Upload is roughly the same too. My connection was absolutely appalling until I upgraded, often not even getting 1Mbps! From my previous experience their support aren't the greatest to deal with either. If it wasnt for the convenience of having phone and TV with them I would move elsewhere.

So you sync at 25Mbps which should only show about 2.5 - 3 MB per second roughly when downloading at full speed approx. If you have windows 8 can you try Network Speed Test app for Windows in the Windows Store its a free speed test from Microsoft which uses Akami servers so it should max out your throughput unlike speedtest.net or others.

I'm on Sky FTTC, absolute carp.

When it was first installed, I got 20Mbps, which I was happy with.

Week two: 17Mbps

Week three: 15Mbps

Then, we had a major fault, the entire phone line died. Took 10 days to get it back up and running. Since then, speed has never topped 8Mbps.

I have contacted Sky multiple times, always for the same round of troubleshooting followed by sweet FA. Wouldn't send an engineer.

Last week, we managed to get an engineer out to look at the Sky satellite dish, while he was there two of his colleagues turned up, one happened to be a BB engineer so I told him about my problems and he very kindly took a look for me (he could have said no, he wasn't there to look at the BB). He told me there was absolutely no record on my account of line problems (I have chat logs proving I contacted them 3 times on Twitter, no recorded calls unfortunately) and that he had no requested my line be retrained.

Have to wait until Monday to see if it's helped; so far, no change. My contract is up in January and I'm long gone!

Having been a Sky customer for many years I never had a problem averaging speeds of around 6mbps across multiple devices in the house normally 1mbps each device due to due to being messed about after a house move I just went from Sky Fiber to Virgin Fiber and have seen a huge increase in speeds, Virgin IMO is far better for net.

Who are you thinking of going with for BB on FTTC ( presumably when your contract ends ) ?

I've had the total opposite experiences ref VM and moved to sky and been fine

I consider that a problem!

Not sure yet, it all comes to us via BT OpenReach so theoretically we'll get the same speed regardless of who we go with, so I'll go with whoever has the best general ratings in the area

Where do you get the ratings from , as in samknows / reviews or what exactly

LOL it never bothered me, guess I didn't know what I was missing ;)

That's my problem - I went from Virgin's true fiber connection at ~30Mbps on the basic package to Sky's poor excuse for a 'fiber' connection (IMO, they shouldn't be allowed to advertise FTTC as a fiber connection, it seems damn unfair to the true fibre connection providers!)

Word of mouth mainly; I find providers vary so much by area I'm better off asking the locals who they use and if they're happy. Tricky as I don't know many round my way and those I do are generally 60+ and not fussed how fast their BB is, but I'm sure a few chats down the local pub will turn something up!

Are you sure Virgin was fibre? It uses the same cable as the TV. I think it's a con that they can call any fibre connections.

It is fibre, yes. Fibre to the node. Just like fibre to the cabinet for BT infinity.

Unless you're offered FTTP or a leased line, no one is selling you "door to door fibre".
