bazgee Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 I recently posted this in the off topic section without realising there is a section for web development. I have also made quite a few changes on the website thanks to other opinions and constructive criticism. I would very much appreciate any advice and feedback you can give me regarding our school website as I still want to keep on improving every section. St. Cuthbert's Primary School | Seaham
SovietRussia Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 I would change the background image - theres a white fade border on it, it makes it look 'disconnected' from the page. Overall its a nice font, nice layout and a consistent WP theme
FN-GM Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 (edited) I would remove your name from the bottom it makes it look like your on some kind of power trip. You will probably find the copyright belongs to the school and not you anyway. I would also put the ofsted report and policies etc under the menu for our school. You have issues with your menu and embedded PDF's See attached. Edited October 16, 2014 by FN-GM

Is anyone else having the same problem as FN-GM ?

Overall its a nice font, nice layout and a consistent WP theme I see what you mean. I change the background image and main header to reflect what time of year it is, a bit like google! But I do agree the autumn background isn't right.
FN-GM Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 Also looks like you have done your home work. I looked for a sample of mandatory requirements and they seem to be present. Good job - https://www.gov.uk/what-maintained-schools-must-publish-online
FN-GM Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 Good advice thank you. The menu and embedded PDF's seem to be fine on my end. Is anyone else having the same problem as FN-GM ? It doesn't happen in chrome but does in Internet Explorer 11.
bazgee Posted October 16, 2014 Author Posted October 16, 2014 It doesn't happen in chrome but does in Internet Explorer 11. Why is it always Internet Explorer 11 I have issues with! No worries I will look into it thank you. I am hoping we have everything Ofsted requires and I am now looking to keep on improving the children's section so they start using the website at home more.
JRowley Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 I like the look and feel, you have kept it relatively simple which in my view is becoming increasingly important. A minor complaint would be that I'm not really keen on the underline that happens when you mouse over a menu.
bossman Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 @bazgee: I don't have any problems with it using IE11 @FN-GM (Should have gone to specsavers hehe!)
pooley Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 I like it. Did you use a template at all or start from scratch? My HT is looking at a new website, he keeps mumbling about doing it in house, but without a template he's got no chance, I couldn't design a pretty paper bag!!
Chuckster Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 I really like the look and feel of your website - well done! Did you create the theme yourself or did a professional do it?
Arreks Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 I like the overall design but it's very sharp and bright, maybe add some border-radius to the main containers.
bossman Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 @bazgee: Well done, good job, when Ofsted came in to see us recently we got an outstanding for our website, they commented on its simplicity and that information was very easy to find with just 2 clicks for anything. Maybe you should have done! You don't have a menu open, so it won't happen! :D Edited October 16, 2014 by FN-GM

FN-GM Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 Hows this? Does this qualify? hehe! You have chopped out the browser window. I bet your using chrome really?
bossman Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 You have chopped out the browser window. I bet your using chrome really? Ooh! your really hard to please @FN-GM It really is IE11! But I had you going for a minute PDF reader plugin is not embedded within the page it seems thats all

Welcome to Bishop Barrington School. Bishop Auckland in County Durham. Always been a fan. We need a how to to copy all of that - - - Updated - - - I really like the look and feel of your website - well done! Did you create the theme yourself or did a professional do it? Tapiochre Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 I see you are unhappy with the underline when hovering over a link. If you are able to edit the theme style sheet, why not add a new rule such as a:hover {text-decoration:none!important} Add this at the end of the style.css file for the theme; the !important property should force all links not to show underlines when hovered. Hope that helps. Chris
