Sirbendy Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 do yourself a favour - create a sysprep ghost image of an XP pro install with Office and a virus checker. Whenever a child/teacher brings their home box in with an "it's Broken", we blast it with the image, and 5 minutes later they walk out with a clean machine running XP, office and a virus checker. Reinstalling it manually is not a nice thing to be lumbered with if it's near the end of the day!
webman Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 We don't do home PCs unless they pay us for it. Although they belive it is their right to have their home PCs done for free, we don't not let them get away with it. Do we expect them [teachers] to give our kids (for those of use who have them) private tuition at no expense? I think not.

Unless they are particularly popular - its cash in hand - no promises of being "taken out for a drink" or "looked after", having been disappointed in both fields before now...

I'd start saying No to that from now on - unless the school is professing to be a IT Repair shop also lol Just my 2p dude. Nath.
Sirbendy Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 NGFL have no issue with it...."as long as they're a student/teacher, they can have Xp/Office from us, here's the media..". Thats the media I used for the sysprep. Steve and I have our doubts, but NGFL keep insisting.. I will be switching it to OO.org 2.0 in the next version, but it's still on XP Pro..I doubt our kids would like Ubuntu!
Dos_Box Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 I would opt for Star Office. More bells and whistles, but still OOo based.
Sirbendy Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Star Office? I remember that..I thought it had just "turned into" OO2..I'll look that up now..
Dos_Box Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Star Office 8 is OOo 2 with added features and fully supported by Sun. http://www.sun.com/software/star/staroffice/index.jsp Free for schools.
Sirbendy Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 One last tip for today... Don't be surprised if your headteacher walks in, chucks you a set of keys and says "can you look at "x"'s car? It's not starting..". First, we fix his in-car bluetooth, then we diagnose and remove/charge a duff battery on a TD Astra Mk3.. IT techies..is there anything we can't do?
eduabncs Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Nope...! Apart from getting some teachers and SMT too listen to us on IT matters! One last tip for today... john Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 I changed a tyre last term, filled holes in a wall, cleaned the floors, changed a light bulb.... the list is endless and I did do some IT as well
mac_shinobi Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 lolol @ "Just don't let them fluster you. I had one who refused to stay in his lesson yesterday and decided to bug me. I went to move some shelving, and he followed me until I suggested he might want to go elsewhere before I accidentally kneecapped him and limited his movements." That's made my day Thanks for that sirbendy lol.
GrumbleDook Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 I get people asking for things all the time. "God, can you give me the lottery numbers." "God, I really need to get this girl into bed!" "God, why do I have to come across the only nice teacher in the school after I have had to deal with 28 stupid ones and feel like crap?" erm ... damn ... have I given way my "other" job now? And yes ... before people say it ... I *DO* have an inferiority complex ... I *know* everyone else is inferior to me!
mac_shinobi Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 When you say "me" you really mean "us on here" lol. hahaha you make me laugh though Tony !! I bet you would of knee capped me the first chance you had at CTC LOL
GrumbleDook Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 As Russ will tell you ... I truly do mean "Me" Of course ... I allow the rest of you to believe similar, but that is because I am a benevolent God ... who takes pity on you all ... Now ... begone little being. I am back off to the stars for the night ... I have new galaxies to create.
