What desktop backup software do you use?

Here in EduGeek Towers we've been using Acronis desktop for the past year or so to manage backing up our local machines. The only problem(s) we have with Acronis is that after a while the scheduled jobs have problems running (they bomb oput for no reason) and incremental backups are flaky to say the least. For imaging though, it's top notch.

I'm currently trialling StorageCraft's Shadow Protect which has a nice set of features inclusing the ability to convert backups to VHD's. I've not got that to work correctly yet as it appears to back up each partition sperately and when creating VHD's won't allow you to select boot partitions etc.

 

What we are not interested in is server based backups, but if you are using a standalone desktop backup solution (Win 8.1 compatible!) please let us know and I'll add it to the list to test out.

Ideally it should be able to create bootable images, full/incremental backups and if the option to convert to VHD's is there we'll take that too!

I use Bvckup 2 on Windows and Arq on OS X.

Surely some is using some kind of desktop backup software (apart from Acronis that is!)?

ShadowProtect Desktop is probably the best option for what you want to do.

Backup Exec System Recovery is really good. It will get an image of the whole machine you can restore of different hardware and virtual machines. You can also restore individual files. Works flawlessly.

data backed up using Xcopy to my NAS at home.

have been tempted to start using restore points, if the PC fails i can reinstall using a captured WIM/ghost image as my pc doesnt change much at home apart from the data.

 

simple and it appears to work ok

We've been using Acronis True Image 2014 and to be honest, it performs well for the first few weeks, it's only that after a while it begins to fail on backups, not appending images or remove old out of date backups - even with plenty of spare disk space - and you end up having to do it all from scratch again.

In essence you simply can't 'set and forget'. It's great for making disk images and immidiate backups, we can't fault it for that, but it falls down in the long term reliability stakes for simple scheduled tasks.

Oh, and it nags you to upgrade to the newest version via task bar pop-ups. Not something I'd expect from a product we've paid for!

Thought the upgrade to 2015 was a freebie?

 

We use it her but for disk imaging which as you say is great, I use the winpe media for whole disk backup and restore.

Sadly not. We had to pay for the upgrade to 2014 and as their user portal now says:

 

If you have an older version of the product, but want to upgrade to a new version of an Acronis product (i.e. moving from version 8.0 to version 10.0), please contact sales to get an Acronis Maintenance and Priority Support license or purchase an upgrade directly.

 

And it may leave us in the lurch for when Win 10 is delivered as often it takes a while for a compatible version\update to be released.

@Arthur - what about 3rd party backup solutions in the cloud ie google back blaze or other companies who you can pay for storage and use there solutions for making backups of your machine state as well as documents etc

Hi @MordyT,

 

Can you get it to create singe disk images rather than it creating each partition sperately? his would be excellent, especaiily for converting to virtual machines.

I'd actually be releived that I was doing something wrong here!
