Thanks button - some use it shyly

I have visited several threads recently where people have asked for advice and as ever with Edugeek mighty useful advice has freely flowed. However, even though written thanks has duly been given the person posting OP hasn't hit the thanks button. Come on folks if thanks is due please use the thanks button. It really does make a difference

AS altruistic as this site is a little acknowledgment goes a long way, a click on the thanks button costs nothing and can help the contributors feel more valued and more likely to help in future.

I've noticed that.

Often from :n00b: s or people who find us in a panic due to some random issue.

Some forums you see lots of sigs where people are askin for the thanks or equivalent. Glad we don't have that here.

I suspect a few dont see the green text, before I added the green/red it was even less used.

Both add rep but the thanks in increments of five and the rep in increments of whatever your rep power is, it is not really the number but the acknowledgment, totally fine if people are new to the forum and have not found the button yet or it is not available in the forum but in the grand scheme of things a thanked post of a rep is a lasting acknowledgment of being helpful. Any acknowledgement (including a posted thanks) is great but it is nice top get some response if you are helpful instead of a cloudy non-determinate haze from the ether of the internet. Acknowledgment also quantifies the usefulness a bit so helps other users that may find themselves in the same situation.

Interesting because I see it slightly differently. I find it odd to thank every single person and usually offer a general thanks at the end of a thread. If someone has gone far out of their way to help me - then I will hit the thanks button.

I see it as a special "extra" thanks and I think others do.

I guess I see it in a more Pavlov'ian way ( Ivan Pavlov - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ), and bells do not sound well over the internet.

I thank useful posts, so, if it helps me, tells me something I didn't know, solves the problem or helps along the way.

Sometimes I thank because it helps the OP even if I'm not in the thread or just to highlight an answer.

Rep is reserved more for reward / extra help.

On one SQL forum I occasionally use there can be as many posts arguing who gets "marked as the answer" than there are answers!

That's another thing, rep accrues but you don't see where from, at least Thanks highlight the posts, and thanks per post average is a form of quality/usefulness.

I'd say it's cos of what's in the post you got it for. You can see the recent posts if you go to your settings page.

 

A comment is nice as well.

The 'rep' button needs to be highlighted, perhaps even with the word 'rep' so people know what/where it is.
