Spy Hard - wonderfully silly film, typical of what I know Leslie Nielson for (I'm young enough that I don't recall any of his 'serious' works). The film took the Michael out of just about every other film of the time. Highly recommended.

Dark Phoenix (Available various PPV places, Disk and Disney+)

 

Nowhere near the train wreck that it's made out to be (though it does feature a CGI train wreck). I preferred it to the two recent Bryan Singer X movies. Still not exactly brilliant, but if you've watched the other X movies it's worth checking out.

I must be more into movies than TV. I've seen seven of the current UK Top 10, and two of the others will likely be watched soon. Yara looks good but as Mme LeMarchand would never watch it, that's an unlikely.

 

TV: None, and none that I feel the need to watch. (Though there is quite a lot of TV on Netflix that we watch).

 

Only a slightly different split if changed to Eng Lang.

The Last Mercenary (Netflix)

 

 

Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as a French agent whose disavowal has led to him spending the last 20 years as a mercenary. When his estranged son finds himself in danger, JCVD must protect him.

 

Action comedy could have been great with a sharper script, tighter direction and a shorter running time. As it is, it has its moments but is far from a must watch.

I watched this with my girlfriends nephew. It was quite a good movie - better than I was expecting. It's more geared towards kids but does have a few "hidden" jokes for adults.

Sweet Girl (Netflix)

 

After his wife dies when a life-saving affordable drug is pulled to protect the interests of a big Pharma corp, Ray Cooper vows revenge.

 

What looks like it's going to be a second-grade actioner is a bit more of an exploration of grief. Some early scenes that make you think "Eh?" do make sense later, but really only worth a watch if you want to see Aquaman playing Pops to Dora the Explorer (with Dorothy Gale/Anathema Device as Mom).

Watched Sonic the Hedgehog on Netflix over the weekend.

It was... Alright?

I mean, don't expect it to be winning any oscars any time soon, but it was passably entertaining enough.

Jim Carrey's performance as Dr. Robotnik was about as eye-rollingly cringey as you expect it to be, based off the previews, but at the end of the day it's still just Jim Carrey being.. Well.. Jim Carrey. So he somehow makes it work.

I can't say I ever watched the Angry Birds movie, but I do agree about Detective Pikachu. It's a rather entertaining movie, provided you don't scrutinise the plot in any way, shape or form.

A good ol 'disengage brain' movie, as I like to call them (although most disengage brain movies tend to be action movies...)

Warning: Sweet Girl does that annoying thing that seems very popular at the moment (especially with Netflix movies) of opening in media res and then flashing back. It's almost as if they think the audience won't watch a film that builds up to the action.

Mosul on netflix

 

I thought it was fantastic portrail of the war against ISIS. It shows it from the Arabic side of things and really does hit the right spot.

 

I would call this a masterpiece of movie making, even if it was a simple story.

 

Really tested the sound system I have as well, one of the best war movies I have seen for atmosphere.
