Security marking iPads

How do you security mark your school iPads? We tried our chemical etch kit, but it won't touch the aluminium. We thought about taking them to Timpsons, but they want £10 a pop and the one in walking distance of the college can't get them in his machine, so we'll have to drive elsewhere. My hand isn't really steady enough for a Dremel engraver, but maybe I could use a stencil? My Dremel experience is zero.

We use a Dremel like tool to etch the school name and postcode in it along with a asset tag sticker and smart water

Sand blasting the school postcode in to the glass would be best

Otherwise a security marking specialist who do compounds for different materials and have one for aluminium i.e selectamark.

We bought ours direct from Apple already marked, they offer a service at checkout.

Could you bend them to resemble the school initials or postcode maybe?

 

Seriously though, if you have (or have access to) a DT department smile nicely at someone to knock you up a metal template. Then a dremel

Thanks for the suggestions. The DT department reckon they can do us a metal stencil and then it's a Dremel.

We paid someone from the local trophy shop to come in and engrave all ours - he was there for more than a day doing 150 at a time.

Another vote for Selectamark here.

 

Their aluminium compound does a fantastic job of marking up iPads using both their small and medium sized stencils. Doesn't take long either and I have had a perfect finish every time.

We use our DT depts laser cutter to etch a school logo and asset tag. It looks awesome and way better than Selectamark. Takes about 1 minute per iPad.

I'd be a bit nervous with a dremel - also are they under warranty still. I imagine it'd invalidate it..

We've had no issue with Apple on the warranty on returned devices that we've lasered

Have you tried asking your science department?

If you find something which will remove aluminium oxide you might also need to be careful with the actual etching process.

We use a Dremel but trying to get a warranty replacement we found out that this invalidates the warranty. :-(
