Jpeg size increases size by 10 fold when sent to printer

Our printing is being seriously hampered by jpegs becoming huge files when spooling on our network printers. Every picture increases by 10 fold, so a 4mb will become 40mb.

We do a lot of printing showing very young children's development and a print run can be of a hundred pictures at a time and more often than not the print queue on the actual printer will just not show any sign of the print job despite seeing it appear in printer properties. A couple of pictures will take about 10 minutes.

We run Canon Uniflow and Secure print so I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it. The problem seems to have come at the same time that we upgraded our main server to 2012 (with Virtual servers running) but kept the printer server running on 2003.

 

Any ideas?, it's really driving me mad!

Try and print lower def images but tbh any file that is printed is spooled into a much larger raw data file that actually gets sent to the printer.

If it is, any idea as to why the huge wait times have only just started. We've been printing photo's like this for years and it's only in the last few weeks that the delays have been happening?

That should be normal; a JPEG is lossy compressed, the printer needs an uncompressed (some drivers may do lossless compression, but that's less effective than the original jpeg) raster, so you will find that the data is much larger.

Have a look at the resolution the files are being saved as. Anything bigger than 1024*768 is natively about the size of a screen, with new cameras with high resolution you can commonly find huge pictures that natively are about the same size as a projection.

Changing the res on every school owned camera/ipad/teachers phone/teachers camera/parents camera is going to be difficult but image resizer is a good piece of software that can assist in changing resolutions. https://imageresizer.codeplex.com/

 

Maybe script it and ask all staff to save photos to a P drive?

We had exactly the same thing here and found it was to do with drivers and PCL versions... I must admit I didn't claim to understand most of what I read when I went into it but its about how the drivers perceive the format. In our case we got a new printer which supported the latest standards and everything went through fine.

I know I sound crazy but next time you get a new, half decent printer in the office, give it a go with the latest drivers.

Yup seems absolutely normal to me if the huge wait times have only just started what's changed in the environment? any new drivers? new drivers aren't necessarily better.

No new drivers, but we upgraded our server over the summer holidays and the domain name changed, the print server itself which contains the Uniflow software stayed on its original 2003 server. Everything else prints normally with no delays, it's only the photo's. Trying to tell the staff to reduce the resolution etc on their camera's flies over their heads, especially as they throw back at me that they have been printing the same size pictures for years without issue. Can't wait to re-new/negotiate new printing contact next year...

you could quietly use some like photoresizer to batch process images in folders so they are a sensible size before they are added to documents.
