The thing is... The people writing this don't understand how it works.

 

Thor is Thor. It's just his name.

 

Having the hammer gives you the power of Thor, but it doesn't make you Thor.

 

 

Like Beta Ray Bill. Had the hammer, had the powers... Still not Thor.

And why can't these people make their own damn characters instead of changing existing ones for the purposes of "inclusion"?

Thor has been a great many things. He's been a frog, he has been transformed into at least 4 different human forms I can think of (Dr. Donald Blake, Jake Olson, Eric Masterson, Sigurd Jarlson), he has been a zombie.

 

Alternate realities have included where Jane Foster found Donald Blakes walking stick and became Thor (in female form).

It would have been more effective if they had put in the effort to make new characters instead of changing existing ones.

 

...we all know they'll just change them back once the novelty wears off.

The thing is, the world of comic books is filled with buff men as super-heros. They're nearly all white men also. How do you break the cycle? People want to read what they know, so introducing new comic books is harder than fixing the homogeneous blob that already exists.

 

Switching genders or races for existing characters might be jarring to long term readers but its a good thing to level the market out and make it more interesting overall!

Most of the responses to that are pointing out that he's missed the point.

 

It's nothing to do with "I hate women superheroes!" it's about rewriting an established character for no damn reason.

It's like changing James Bond into Janet Bond... the female spy who drinks her Vodka Martini stirred not shaken. It would be ridiculous, lazy and just down right awful.

 

Where as a new original movie about a kickass female spy (or if say Black Widow got her own movie...mmmmm Scarlet)...well that would be awesome.

To be fair, some people theorise that "James Bond" is a pseudonym tied to "007".

 

So there could be a "Jane Bond" if a female agent draws "007".

I'm not entirely sure @X-13 has ever been expressively clear about his/her/its their sex. And gender's a whole different kettle of fish and we're not opening that can of worms again D:

 

Never really been a massive comic book fan, personally. I like superheroes.. Ish? I have a passive interest in them, I suppose. But this is just bizarre.

I don't mind female super heroes (one of the reasons I'm actually a huge X-Men fan.. but still passively) and admittedly they could make this work if they did it properly..

 

If you can only wield Thor's hammer if you're deemed worthy, then all the current Thor (for the purposes of this thread, He-Thor) has to do is something to make him unworthy. The traditional 'Hero's spectacular fall from grace'. Or, if that would be too out-of-character, just have him die. Conjure up a plausible way for the Hammer to be delivered to the new Thor (She-Thor) and you're golden..

 

However it does diminish the idea of Thor as a superhero from the 'chosen one' who is able to wield the hammer, to just another title passed down to whoever has it at the time. If He-Thor dies and She-Thor takes over, picking up the title, then it doesn't render everything He-Thor has done irrelevant, but still alters it just enough that it's.. Not the same.

 

Would've been better writing a new superhero, IMO.
