Tonight, I'm on the edge wondering what I'm going to walk into tomorrow as today the AC failed in the server room.

So, I've commandeered every desk fan possible and pointed them in the appropriate direction. Right now, it's not looking good. A completely new unit may be needed.

Let's hope I don't encounter a network manager's nightmare tomorrow and pass the server room only to hear complete silence.

Our air con fail over night a few months back, it burnt out, common fault according to the engineer. I got to work to calls that "we can't log in" the primary domain controller had overheated and shut down. The room was like an oven so I had to shut everything down until the air con was repaired. Took about 4 hours including the call out. 😨

Fingers crossed for your servers .... I once worked in a building where the AC was to open the window of the server room. Given that the server would freeze up every three days or so on really hot days in the summer, it didn't take long to build a business case for an AC unit.

Exactly! My server room is a cosy 32oC normally at this time of year - rising to the odd 38oC in the last few weeks. Must have went higher last night as one of the servers had shut down.

 

Thankfully a lot of the servers are being removed soon from the managed service provider as it's going mostly cloud based.

My office rarely gets below that temp! First thing in the morning its mid 20s, as soon as the sun moves round at 10am it starts pushing 30. I've seen it push 50 in there on hot days.

 

When we only had a portable AC in the server room it never got below 40, ever. Now, even with a proper AC running full wack 24/7 it's around 24. You'd think I'm in Spain not NE England!

ours managed to turn off about 18 months ago in error at midnight, I noticed straightaway at 8am the next morning because the sound was like a jet engine taking off when I entered the library, with every single fan in everything going flat out, had to get it back on and get the portable AC unit we have into the room and it took about 12 hours to get the room back down to its 18 degrees temperature,

 

I would suggest looking to hire a portable AC if you can to help get it back cool fast if you havent got one, well worth it.

It's not a nice feeling when it fails. Ours has been giving us some issues over the past 12 months. Touch wood it's all ok now it's on it's second unit. We can get by without AC if needed by shutting down some machines that are not vital and opening the door for the server room and letting the ac in the 2 it suites that surround the server room work their magic. Does mean shutting those suites though.

Sounds like when we had 'builders' in, got in there after many screams about slowness or not logging in to hear a typhoon fighter spooling up behind the server room door. The glass in the door was hot to the touch and it must have been pushing 60 Celsius. Lots had thermally shut off but lots obviously had not. Popped two UPSs that day and more hardware failed in the next weeks.

They are noisy as hell. I was imaging machines in that room and I ended up turning it off because it wasn't that hot. Decided my hearing was more important!

What temps do you guys have the servers set to auto shutdown? Ours at it's peak overnight hits 64oC on the processor but it's running the backups so ideally don't want it to turn off midway through! Server room / My Office was about 34oC when i walked in this morning.

The relief and joy of a new AC unit.

Fitted and finished today, the server room is like the Arctic. It's amazing. Also put a smile on certain staff members' faces when I returned their desk fans.

 

This is a happy Monday. :)

AHHH HAHAHAHAH! Not shopped, but it's probably more fat than muscle on that particular picture. I'm more defined these days ;)
