KS2/ Primary : Shared or individual users?

Just wondering how you set up users

 

Do you have individual logins or group logins?

 

A school I visited has two years per group. So years 1 & 2, 3 & 4, and 5 & 6 have 3 logins in total. The folders are redirected onto the server and in there the kids each have folders in their own name as well as group folders for specific projects.

 

The school are having problems managing files!

School 1 (Junior): 1 login/child with individual folders. Don't get too many "password not working" calls (and I suspect many of those are "pretend it's not working so I can skive" calls. Year Group folders in Public area for shared work. Teachers have access to all children's folders.

School 2 (Primary): 1 login/folder per Intake Year with named folders for each child from Y2 upwards. 1 intake has individual logons as that teacher could be bothered to make the children do it. Teachers have access to all children's folders.

School 3 (Primary): 1 login/folder per Year Group. Not keen on this as the work has to be manually "moved up" (though I suspect it isn't).

 

I'd personally like individual logons (maybe not for Reception?) with a shared Intake Group area.

Thanks for the replies. What do you use for user names? Do you set up teachers to change passwords?

I have been trying to get individual logins at a primary but the children sometimes work in groups and this has caused all sorts of issues when tested on the Year 5 class. For example, pupil 1 might login and work with a group and save the work to his home drive, the following week pupil 1 is off ill and the teacher just does not have the time to sort these issues out, or so I have been told.

S1: Last 2 digits of Intake/Initial/Surname, e.g. 12JSmith

S2: Last 2 digits of Intake

S3: Year1, Year2 etc.

 

Even if I was brave enough to let staff change passwords, they'd never do it.

I use the same as LeMarchand

 

Intake year/Initial/Surname

 

Works well, very little duplicates. Enables the kids to build their own portfolio of work and also stops them deleting other children's work.

 

It also helps with accountability - Using Policy Central or other like software when it takes a screen shot you see who is doing it.. Not just Y2 etc.

At the primary we have class logins right up to year 6. How they cope when they get to high school I have no idea. I have said that they ought to change at least for years 5 and 6 but as yet nothing has happened.

At the middle, all pupils have individual logins. First name.Surname seems to work OK as long as they are separated by year group on AD in case of duplicates

We currently use shared logins - however this is going to change this summer.

 

Years 5 and 6 will get named logons as they are at they age where interfering with fellow students work is funny... Year R - 4 will continue to use a shared login.

We currently have individual logins for Y3 and above, but we don't have passwords.

Soon, very soon... they are all going to get passwords (maybe over summer), then we are moving down the school to Y2 having individual accounts and passwords (maybe the same password to make things easy for the little "Darlings" for the first year)
