yugo Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Does anyone know if there is any value in a water damaged iPad 2? I have 15 of them here.
JB7 Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 How functional are the devices ? Normally a 16GB water damaged iPad 2 can go for about £40 if it generally works okay
JB7 Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 @yugo Just came across this, might be worth a read: Apple (United Kingdom) - Reuse and Recycling Programme I just quickly did a mock one for an iPad 2 16GB (WiFi + 3G) with water damage/works okay/no other damage/power cord supplied came to £38
yugo Posted June 17, 2014 Author Posted June 17, 2014 They are all dead. They got soaked by a fire hose while they were snuggled away inside the storage box which filled up with water. Thanks for the link, filled it out but it "deemed that your product has no resale value"
JB7 Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Aw man that's a sickener If Apple is saying £0 then you are technically going to be throwing them away, speak to SLT about getting them on eBay or similar selling site and list them as spares and repairs It may catch the eye of a Technology Recycling/Restoration company who will break them down and use the working parts to repair others
matt40k Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 School didn't claim on the insurance? Just ask because if the insurance company paid out, they need to be thrown away else they get pretty nasty.
Crumpet Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 I know it's a long shot, but have you tried drying them out? A bowl of rice can work on mobile phones sometimes. A dehumidifier might do the trick if you put it in a small room up high with the iPads. Even broken, they can still sell on Ebay so long as you make the potential buyers aware that they are purchasing a faulty product.
yugo Posted June 17, 2014 Author Posted June 17, 2014 I think they are past that Crumpet, you can visibly see the water in the screens and when I opened one up there was signs of corrosion. By the sounds of it they might be best put in the local recycling bin. I'd say the only part still salvageable is the rear casing.
Bananas Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 I couldn't possibly condone fraud but there's a reasonable market for such things for people to then claim on their household insurance for a new one. Never done it myself nor woud I but i've heard about it. I guess that's why knackered stuff sells on ebay sometimes
yugo Posted June 17, 2014 Author Posted June 17, 2014 Well I wouldn't try that myself Bananas. I might put one on eBay though to see if anyone wants it.
yugo Posted June 17, 2014 Author Posted June 17, 2014 Can't say for sure but I estimate it was 3 days!
JRowley Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 (edited) 3 days? Yeah they are toast I would expect, you have to get them out in a couple of minutes to keep them alive really. I'm not sure they are worth anything either, the damage will be pretty extensive to most of the components, your basically looking at the value of the metals now, so not much, and even then you'll struggle to get someone to buy them for that level or recycling. Yeah I didn't hold much hope of them ever working again, one original iPad that was in the same box did survive somehow though and the notesync charging unit did too.

I would probably retire that one and frame it on a wall or something, it's seen enough trauma to live out the rest of its days as a digital photo frame perhaps showing happy memory's of its fallen brethren, the plaque can read 'Never forget #WateryGrave' or similar. yugo Posted June 18, 2014 Author Posted June 18, 2014 Yeah I have no plans of putting it through any more trauma
IT_Ninja Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 I'd be very curious if this worked: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Reviveaphone-DRAGONS-Damaged-Smartphone-Recovery/dp/B00HR25NA6

It's a 50/50 thing plus if you've got 15 of them, trying to fix one could be eventful and worth it if it does indeed work. If not just to satisfy curiosity - think of the environment
