Been going through the cupboard-o-doom and shifting through the now abandoned for a year PGCE scheme laptops to assign them to general staff today.

Was going well until I found MR SMITH's laptop. MR SMITH seems to have self-righteously slapped stickers spelling his name in a juvenile font, as well as random zombies across the lid of the laptop.

They are proving difficult to remove. :(

So, got any tips for removing nasty stickers and sticky residue?

Also keen to hear your stories and policies for this.

If this MR SMITH had tried to return this to me I would have told him to get out and clean it before returning.

Do it badly... so badly it damages the laptop.

Then force MR SMITH to pay for the replacement, as THEY put the stickers there in the first place.

Idiot gets shamed, example made, free upgrade.

It's a win-win-win situation!

[Don't actually do this!]

My last workplace encouraged this so we could tell whose laptop is whose at a glance. Staff would often have a few decals on their laptops though a few were recognisable anyway due to the damage.

My first work laptop ended up with a large hazchem flammable sticker on the lid. :D

I've only been here a year and a lot of teachers have personalised their machines, I don't really mind this as they are coming up to 5 years old . *cries at budget*

I wouldn't expect a PGCE to do this though...a bit cheeky imo.

Give it to a board student, we have stickers on laptops to say which laptop trolley they come from, but some students get so board they start removing them.

"Replacing bored students with board students will drastically improve our behavior statistics."

May sound odd. Put put a towl over them and heat them with a iron "briefly". Works a treat on every sticker on a laptop. So well I invested in a heat gun.

We used some kind of foamy stuff (it was actually a screen cleaner) but because it sprayed on as a liquid and quickly expended into more of a foam-ish it was pretty good for getting in sticky labels.. Combine that with some kind of flat, firm plasticky utensil (I actually used a spare blank drive bay cover) and some elbow grease and it worked for me. Took probably a few minutes per sticker, and these were on something awful.

Realistically just get anything that scrapes without damaging the laptop, and something to hydrate the sticky residue, and you should be alright.

+1 for this. The heat 'melts' the glue. You might end up with some residue but it's fairly easy to clean. Try using a hair dryer if you're not happy ironing your laptops.

With all the hark about thinner/lighter machines, go one step further and get a trouser press? :D
