Garacesh Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 You'll write off 500 quid? Are you serious? Small claims court!!!! Nothing 'small' about it! That's 50% of my monthly salary! Yeah, seriously, I'd gun for getting reimbursed, @Iain.Faulkner. If the cows are now kept with Farmer B or C (the ones that shifted them), Farmer A (original owner) will probably try and get his cows back. I'm guessing B or C has more than £500 of stock. He's not just going to let it be.

He's not just going to let it be. Don't get me wrong, I want to be reimbursed, we put a lot of effort into that garden and put a lot of time into it. When we find the owner we will be looking to be reimbursed....with the Wife just about to finish getting statutory maternity pay we can't afford to throw away £500
CAM Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Story from my old railway job. We were on a crew train to a job when we the foreman does a double take at the embankment and hits the brakes. He reverses the train just to find a small herd of escaped cows coming down from the field above. Cue a group of guys in bright orange herding them back up the hill before they reach the track and delay the first passenger train of the day, then we spent the next hour patching the fence up. They move pretty quickly up steep slopes we could barely climb (whilst dropping their own 'extra obstacles' in our way). Apparently once they get a taste of grass on the other side of the fence they want more, so they might be back to your garden if they get out again. 1
ButterflyMoon Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Tell the police to stop mincing around and find the owner!!!
Iain.Faulkner Posted May 22, 2014 Author Posted May 22, 2014 Did anyone else's garden get invaded? No just ours :-(

CHR1S Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 I would hazard a guess that the tags on their ears isn't just to make them look pretty As @creese pointed out - Tagging your cattle You must ensure that all cattle born on or after 1 January 1998 have an official ear tag in each ear. This is known as ‘double tagging’. Each tag must show the same unique number for that animal. There are two types of ear tag - primary and secondary. The main ear tag, known as the primary ear tag, is a yellow, plastic, two-piece ear tag. Since 1 January 2000, ear tag numbers must have a specific numeric format. They contain the crown logo, country code, herdmark, individual animal number and check digit. Secondary ear tags can be printed to allow space for management information. This information can include details relevant to a particular animal, such as visual identification, its name or a different unique number. This is useful so you don’t need to check that the herd mark and single number check digit match the animal’s number, eg for medication. There is no minimum size requirement for secondary tags, so button or metal tags may be used. You must fit ear tags within 20 days of an animal’s birth, with the exception of dairy cattle, which must have at least one tag fitted within 36 hours of birth.
woodham Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 The Rural Payments Agency - Cattle Keeper's Handbook have a chat with Defra they should be able to help ( or the local vet )
Iain.Faulkner Posted May 22, 2014 Author Posted May 22, 2014 I would hazard a guess that the tags on their ears isn't just to make them look pretty As @creese pointed out - Thankfully we do have pictures of the tags, so we should be able to trace the owner.....which we are in the process of doing :-)
Edu-IT Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Three pages already? Stop being so moody and milking this. Have you not got butter stuff to be getting on with? 2

korifugi Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Three pages already? Stop being so moody and milking this. Have you not got butter stuff to be getting on with? To be honest - there is cause for concern. Had they barged through the door - it'd have been positively friesian last night.

I was sat here thinking "Wow, that's a bit harsh!" until I saw that post from @fiza. Not like me to miss a pun (or three)! Is it the weekend yet?
jinnantonnixx Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 What would Bart Simpson say in this situation.... 'Eat my shorts?'

Go back to sheep. Your 8-hours-a-day are farmer important than people realise. @JamesBanks7 Oooh that was a good one! Wish I'd have thought of that.
SiliconAlley_Sam Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 @SiliconAlley_Sam How are you letting jokes like that go pasteurise ?? I wish I could thank you more than once for this. And I really don't know... it's udderly ridiculous how slow my brain is working this morning.

JB7 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 @JamesBanks7 Oooh that was a good one! Wish I'd have thought of that. I had been waiting for the perfect opportunity to say it and then @SiliconAlley_Sam set me up perfectly I wish I could thank you more than once for this. And I really don't know... it's udderly ridiculous how slow my brain is working this morning. Well I personally think you need to get a mooove on and start to look further afield for some sort of wake up technique
elsiegee40 Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 (edited) Given that the movement of cattle is controlled by strict regulations (see here), I imagine that the police will be treating this very seriously and will have tracked the owner down. If they can't / won't tell you, then you should speak to DEFRA Edited May 22, 2014 by elsiegee40 1
